@Edent is there a law that says you have to give a number? If so, it seems like a bizarre requirement (I might want to know specifically who my data is being shared with, but I care not how many). If not, why do they do it?

@steve @Edent it's part of the https://iabeurope.eu/transparency-consent-framework/ so everyone who implements that flow ends up doing it -

@Edent horrifying. But what is "legitimate interest" as distinct from other interest. I decline 'normal' cookies and then have to decline legitimate interest separately. The only legitimate interest I can ever think of might be the original website, and even then ...

@Edent looking at that I see many of these partners might claim legitimacy but I think many claims would clearly be very weak

@Edent thanks

@Edent 1637 is the highest I've had:
Quixoticgeek (@quixoticgeek@v.st)
Attached: 1 image Have been noticing cookie pop ups with increasing and increasing numbers of "partners". This one is the new record I came across today. Beating the previous by 12. How the fuck does an organisation even properly vet 1637 partners to make sure they aren't evil? At least there's a reject all option. Anyone found a higher number of partners on a cookie pop up?
(void *) social site (social.v.st)

What's the largest number of "trusted partners" you've seen in a cookie consent pop-up?
@Edent more importantly, WTF is ‘legitimate interest’?
Like, at the most basic level, shouldn’t all requests for data be based ok a ‘legitimate interest’?

And maybe they should, but 'consent' is another legal basis for data collection, which is why bad sites make consent easy and refusal clunky. -

@mjr @Edent TBF, I don’t see what most people actually get from the cookie world. Ad revenues are near nothing unless you’re very popular. We used a bit of Plausible code to measure basic stuff, and frankly it was more than enough analytics.
And the kicker? Our (modest) social media spend had zero impact. But our (again, modest) traditional marketing, including print, was very effective.
Maybe it was different before, but it’s all enshittified to the extreme now.
