@david_chisnall Sounds just like arguing for car crashes adding value to the economy, on the basis that they can bring in business for garages / car dealers.

@dysfun It was. Literally. The economy benefits because third-rate sales people are able to do more cold calling (meanwhile, the first-rate ones are building trust with their customers, who then buy more things from them, something LLMs do not help with at all).

Then there are venture capital funded care homes and companies providing support for the now disabled car drivers/passengers in their homes and modified cars for those with life changing injuries.
All these services being paid for by taxpayers thus increasing profit for the private companies involved by moving money that the government raises from its citizens into the pockets of speculators in the private sector.

@david_chisnall Let me turn this on its head. You are the gateway drug to someone getting more involved in the Fediverse. Maybe it'll transform the person over time - assuming they didn't just spin up an intentional troll account.

@david_chisnall This has made something click in my head, it's always about the spam isn't it? Like, everyone stopped answering their landline because of it, then email spam became a solved problem so then we got social media spam instead which drove people away from social media. So now we've got content spam that didn't even get written by anyone.

@david_chisnall serious ask: I've been trying to compile a list of use cases for which generative AI is a better or more viable alternative. The one example I can come up with is for visually impaired people to interact with pictures sent to them (asking questions about them) or with product at stores without having to wait for a human to be available. That's it. Do you know any others?

@toldtheworld @david_chisnall I've heard it's an improvement on conventional speech-to-text. Anecdotal, but anecdotes from people with e.g. major motor disabilities who actually rely on voice typing as a tool.

@individeweal @toldtheworld @david_chisnall I couldn't quickly find it, but in last half week or so I saw about someone with specific accessibility needs around mobility having an LLM create a tool working how they needed it to, IIRC for navigating on computer.
