@hpod16 was the fediverse created in europe? it's insane to say this when the technology itself is being mantained and expanded by people all around the world, including americans, asians, south americans, africans, etc.

@stooovie @hpod16 To be clear: "W Social" isn't by the European Commission or the EU as a whole but by a startup and media platform called "We Don't Have Time".

@hpod16 It means When I joined it said select a server. I picked one that said it was about Science, Books. etc. And it turned into just politics. If I want Politics I can go to X. I go to Insta for cats, and fun stuff, I keep hoping for more about EU on mastodon, but it is all Hate Trump, Hate America, Hate Jews. So I rarely come here. Anyway, will check in later I am a hopeful person. Peace! โ˜ฎ๏ธ

@MissWarcraft @hpod16 the server you're on is currently the largest one on Mastodon, and thus probably the hardest one to moderate. When you have time, have a look at smaller servers - there are loads of them now - and pick one with a policy you like.

But Mastodon isn't really about hanging on your own server only. Use hashtags to find those conversations and users you want to follow. I rarely if ever look at the posts on my own server now, let alone the global feed (or whatever it is called).

In this case I'm not against this kind of answering only half the question tbh.

My online world would be poorer without seeing people from all over the world. Including the cool kind of people from the US.

@project1enigma @hpod16 @darkoneko This! Besides: Somebody on the Fediverse can also make โ€“ in theory โ€“ an instance which only allows "certified citizens" (whatever that means).

@MissWarcraft You aren't really locked into a server. (To be clear: Yes, you can't migrate your posts *right now* โ€“ it's being worked on โ€“ but you don't loose your network when switching servers as you can migrate you followers and followings.)

@hpod16 @EUCommission How about updating the UE Commission web site to include a link to Mastodon then?
I know a link to Mastodon is present on the Social Media Channels page, but it would fit way better on the front page.

@ltning Works well here, and i can host it myself on a shared host just using git. No bloody extras involved, it's plain php with a database. Mastodon at least can't do that.

@GunChleoc @GunChleoc @ltning @Hannah Grace @beemoh @Lucien Maybe it's also worth taking a look at (streams) and Forte, both created and still maintained by the same guy who invented Friendica and Hubzilla.

In terms of privacy, security and self-moderation, they're at least on par with Hubzilla, and they're both nomadic like Hubzilla. UX-wise, they're more streamlined, especially permissions settings, and more geared towards today's Fediverse. Their learning curve is somewhere between Friendica and Hubzilla, but mostly because they default towards privacy rather than everything being public.

However, (streams) has only got a very very few public, open-registration servers and not a single working one in Europe at all anymore. It can't be crawled either, so FediDB, Fediverse Observer and FediIndex don't list its servers. And Forte doesn't have any public, open-registration servers whatsoever currently.

Maybe it's also important to know that their code is hosted by Codeberg in Berlin, but the developer is in Australia.

@project1enigma @benny @lucien @hpod16 people often mistake familiarity for ease, like when windows sysadmins complain about having to type a command on linux because it's "hard to remember" right before listing off their 12 pages of instructions on which 10 menus you have to go down and pixel hunt or a 200 character long registry keys you need to search for in regedit to fix a basic setting.

I shall rememberยน the phrase "people often mistake familiarity for ease".

I have explained it (or tried to) to so many people in many word, and this summarises it neatly.

                                Cheers!

@hpod16 can someone tag any government official accounts? I'd like to get news from the source.

@hpod16 The state of things. X has 650 Million Active users and Mastodon has 2.5 million. There is a reason. #Musk #Mastodon #SocialMedia

@MissWarcraft self-reported numbers, they choose what they define as "active users". Also, those users are not equally distributed across the world. For example, in Austria the Twitter usage even in its heyday was tiny. This statistic I attached is from 2023, you can see pretty well how irrelevant Twitter/X always was.
