Sometimes, people on Facebook don't know the Fediverse exists.
The European Commission likes to tell them.

@hpod16 one cannot blame them at all. Facebook, X, Instagram, and similar platforms owned by large IT companies rely on ease of use and comercial stuff to remain popular.
For good, alternatives like Mastodon remain social because they rely on recommendation rather than profit.
I try to carry my friends here, while looking for new ones (the second, being the easier).

I read it like the person who asked wanted a silo while the EU Commission social media people answered with the actually open alternative. Like even if there were Fedi servers that allow only people verified to be EU citizens (or residents), one could still interact with all the world across servers.
@project1enigma @hpod16 @moftasa The moderators on the proposed EU centric server can be very strict about allowing engagement from the USA. Some USA based servers allow hateful content, others don't. The mods can block entire servers that are lax about allowing such negativity while still allowing engagement from "nice" servers. I imagine the original requester might be okay with that? Otherwise, yes, an EU server *could* be created that blocks literally EVERYTHING that isn't EU.

@hpod16 I'd go out on a limb to suggest that "EU citizen only" means "no foreigners, no migrants"

@xinit gosh I hope thatโs not what they meant.
Maybe the social media manager was just a bit too excited about mastodon and looking for a way to promote it. -

Maybe the social media manager was just a bit too excited about mastodon and looking for a way to promote it.@hpod16 To be clear, the EU Commission is fine, it's the redacted person demanding the 'citizens-only' one that reads oddly to me.
I might just be cynical

@xinit I know I know. To be honest, I didnโt notice that part when I first read the comment, and slightly cringing about the phrasing now. When you handle thousands of comments per day your brain gets a bit muddled. So I kind of hope people stop noticing.

@hpod16 the problem is that the same people that don't know will run into lots of UX issues when trying Fediverse. I know a few sadly...
@lucien @hpod16 I solution for the "Server choosing" problem can be https://fedidb.com/welcome

@hpod16 oh wow. They actually put their money where their mouths are ๐ซถ

@hpod16 was the fediverse created in europe? it's insane to say this when the technology itself is being mantained and expanded by people all around the world, including americans, asians, south americans, africans, etc.
@nelson Mastodon is developed in Germany, Peertube in France.

@gelbphoenix misskey is developed in japan, sharkey is developed by people in north america, and both pixelfed and loops were made by a canadian.

@hpod16 ...and then propose a new proprietary network "W"
-
@hpod16 It means When I joined it said select a server. I picked one that said it was about Science, Books. etc. And it turned into just politics. If I want Politics I can go to X. I go to Insta for cats, and fun stuff, I keep hoping for more about EU on mastodon, but it is all Hate Trump, Hate America, Hate Jews. So I rarely come here. Anyway, will check in later I am a hopeful person. Peace!
๏ธ@MissWarcraft @hpod16 the server you're on is currently the largest one on Mastodon, and thus probably the hardest one to moderate. When you have time, have a look at smaller servers - there are loads of them now - and pick one with a policy you like.
But Mastodon isn't really about hanging on your own server only. Use hashtags to find those conversations and users you want to follow. I rarely if ever look at the posts on my own server now, let alone the global feed (or whatever it is called).
-
In this case I'm not against this kind of answering only half the question tbh.
My online world would be poorer without seeing people from all over the world. Including the cool kind of people from the US.
@project1enigma @hpod16 @darkoneko This! Besides: Somebody on the Fediverse can also make โ in theory โ an instance which only allows "certified citizens" (whatever that means).

๏ธ@MissWarcraft You aren't really locked into a server. (To be clear: Yes, you can't migrate your posts *right now* โ it's being worked on โ but you don't loose your network when switching servers as you can migrate you followers and followings.)

@beemoh @gunchleoc @lucien @hpod16 May I suggest looking at #Hubzilla too? It seems to be getting at least as much attention, and even a few shillings of EU money(!). It is, as I understand, a fork of an early version of Friendica. It is a very versatile platform.

@hpod16 I don't remember whether it was facebook, but once upon a time mentioning other networks on one of the big social websites would result in punishment -
@mycotropic You could look at https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon
Sadly on GitHub.

@hpod16 @EUCommission How about updating the UE Commission web site to include a link to Mastodon then?
I know a link to Mastodon is present on the Social Media Channels page, but it would fit way better on the front page.

@ltning Works well here, and i can host it myself on a shared host just using git. No bloody extras involved, it's plain php with a database. Mastodon at least can't do that.
(Also apparently Africa, Asia, and the rest of the Americas apparently do not matter, but I digress)
