@cwebber Also: we need to eat and we don't need most of what those new data centers are being used for!

People do the same whataboutism about vegetarianism/veganism too FWIW
"Oh yeah? Well if you're advocating for vegatarianism, why not advocate for biking instead of driving cars, highways kill a lot of animals and cars emit so much CO2"
Buddy I got news for you I do that too

I'm the leftie queer who's saying yeah we should be worried about the environment as a multidisciplinary concern and try to tackle it from as many angles as we can, I'm sorry this is annoying, since I already agree with all your whataboutism directions and say "yes that too!"

I am vegan and am worrying about how the dairy industry and the meat industry are tightly entangled and that because of that vegetarianism doesn't contribute to a reduction of animal suffering in a meaningful way (acknowledging that going vegetarian is an amazing step towards veganism, thank you vegetarians, and please keep walking the path!), and I'm worrying about the datacenter impact on climate change. -

@cwebber the mode of transportation or the Porcupine Tree song?

@janneke Pretty much I am the same way with vegetarianism / veganism as I am with free software
I still run my nonfree blobs to keep my computer running but if everyone were running hippie computers with FOSS, we could get rid of those much easier too

@cwebber probably overspecific but I think non-highway driving is the first thing to try and eliminate cars for, short/mid-range with small load is what bikes are more naturally suited to and cars are often extremely stupid in that application
going several hundred miles on a bike is rather an undertaking, and trains can't go to the range of endpoints a car can -

@cwebber "Well if youre so worried about big tech takingg over you should design your own Linux distro and design your own decentralised social media" /j -
@pawv As much progress as we can from as many directions as we can! There's limits within peoples' individual lives, but we can make a lot of collective difference together!

@april Now now I didn't design my own distro, I'm just a contributor to one

@cwebber im currently making my own
and i did design or coauthor Versia as federated network but too tired for that and back with just being a average AP user haha

@cwebber
I would love to see a vegetarian world.Much like I would love to see a mostly vegan world where half of the people would still eat honey and ride a horse from time to time.
I believe we'll get there eventually and have to focus on the path and on inspiring and acknowledging eachother.

@cwebber but also, so tired of the crappy individualist approach! 51% of Americans going vegan won't save us, but 51% of Americans voting as a block could.
There was a plastic straw ban passed where I live, which I think was one of the dumbest "pretend to care" things possible. It pisses of conservatives, and is annoying, and everyone can complain about big government.
Actual change? Ban plastic beverage containers, cans and glass are fine, and the beer industry proves it can work.

@cwebber I very much like high speed trains, the kind we've been promised for decades but assholes in government keep killing.
