Nothing like getting woken up at 4 am by PG&E telling me about an unplanned power outage. Since it’s been an hour, so it’s not a really quick fix (PG&E says power back by 2 pm, but they tend to be conservative), I’ve got the refrigerator plugged into my backup power supply and everything else unplugged to avoid any potential damage in a power surge.
I have a doctor’s appointment mid-morning and getting my car out of the garage will be a challenge with no power (there’s a cord to pull, but I’ve never done that before) — so I sure hope power comes back before I need to leave,Update: power back at 6:23 am — yay!

@eniatitova Thanks! Power back in a little over two hours, so not too bad. Just relieved I won’t need to wrangle with the garage door. Oh, and the interrupted sleep is indeed a drag. I see a nice nap in my future.

@jeridansky @eniatitova Sorry, Weirdly I see a few of those in our area of the East Bay today too, wonder what’s going on. Ours went offline around 6am but it was a quick restore, nearby neighborhoods remain without power. FWIW garage door openers made after 2019 in CA require battery backups to avoid the issue.

@deewani Yeah, odd given no wind, no rain, no indication of a traffic accident affecting a pole. 500+ households, too, in my area. Oh well.
Thanks for the info on garage door openers! Mine is older than that, so it would be worth getting it replaced with one that has a battery backup.

@jeridansky I have the same situation with garage door. The one time I did pull the cord, I needed a neighbor with a ladder to come put it back on track.
What do you use for power backup?

@jeridansky
I didn't learn about it until ours failed and started beeping, but some garage door openers have an internal battery that's good for 2 or 3 up/down cycles in case of a power outage. Who knew? -

Who knew?@donaldham Yeah, someone just told me in a reply here that ones made after 2019 have a battery backup. Mine is much older than that, though. If it doesn't have a battery backup I'll see about replacing it with one that does.

@jeridansky Thanks! I'm going to look into this.
