    I'm obviously not serious, but the issue of scams and fraud are hitting older people in terrible ways and not much is being done about it.

    We have activated every gambling addition in the country.

    A more serious proposal is a list that people with issues with gambling could add themselves to that would block their cards from being processed by any gambling or prediction outfit.

    You could get off the list by doing some forms and a waiting period.

      @futurebird and if you lied when you were 11 and said you were 18, then the age restriction kicks in at 58

        @futurebird

        Australia has a system where you can be added to a self-exclusion list for gambling services hosted in AU.

        Anecdotally, I hear that being on this list results in more spam from overseas online gambling services that are not covered by the exclusion.

          @joannaholman @futurebird

          The anecdotal example I gave was from someone who used that option. It works from a list of known gambling payment destinations, but knows nothing of the frequently ephemeral overseas examples. And it seems also that there are services that use PayID email addresses to route funds to selected gambling sites. It's good to have options like these, but they can give a false sense of security to concerned friends and relatives.

            @futurebird Elder abuse via online or text message scams is common, effective and hugely embarrassing to the folks who are victimized by it. I wish that we had more cops working on it, and stiffer penalties for the perpetrators.

              I want to see kalshi and others included in something like this in the US.

              And they'd throw a fit about it which I think would be educational to see.

                  Very little was being enforced before they gutted consumer protections... right now next to nothing is being investigated ... it's a big free for all.

                  Check on your people. Review their bank statements with them.

                    @futurebird Yeah, but that would require entities who make money off exploiting people to stop exploiting the most easily exploited. We need to just make it legally indefensible to exploit people.

                      Gambling isn't real economic activity and should not be counted in GDP.

                      It creates no value.

                        @futurebird I'm pretty sure this exists even in most US states, try looking for Self-Exclusion Lists. Maryland has one.

                        Now, I've also heard that some companies go out of their way to target people on these lists. And all the fun new gambling companies operate on a zero-ethics model already ("Kalshi: Legal In All 50 States!"), so I don't know how effective the lists are.

                          @kim @futurebird Now you’re on to something! Blocklists for parental phones and laptops! I’d like one tailored to block police blotter news reports, and automatically mute Trump and a couple dozen others if their voice comes on…. Can we get our kids to go through the mail too?

                            @futurebird it's a big issue and it doesn't get enough support. I was at a presentation by a liaison of my attorney general and she said Colorado is getting 2-3000 complaints a month about fraud/scams, mostly in the elderly population. And that's just the people who go through the process of filing a complaint over it.

                                      @futurebird I don't have children, but given how the future has turned out, I sure hope I die before I reach age 65.
