@PsyChuan @futurebird isn't that a flail?

@apLundell @futurebird the paracord grip isn't big enough and wouldn't be long enough. you can, however, unwind it.
-
@futurebird The first would be perfect for when you're dropped in the middle of the woods with nothing more than your business shirt.
Happens all the time.
@futurebird Of course you can bet that the guy who buys that button is already carrying at least one pocket knife and probably a hunting knife strapped to his leg.

Listen. You don't know my life OK?

Still think the button knife is kinda cool... but I would
1. cut myself
2. forget about it and get detained at the airport.@futurebird oh samesies
When I was a kid, a teacher led us in an exercise about creativity or something and we were supposed to list ten new uses for various common objects like a ball or a button
Now, this was the 80s so cartoon violence was common. And you could get those gunpowder snap things down at the corner deli
I said you could put a little bit of explosive in the buttons and scatter them like mini-mines
Teech was frozen in panic

@futurebird My classmate Jarrett provided an acceptable answer when he suggested a cup for "sports protection"

I like your idea better.

We have:
1. Button Knife
2. Tiny 8GB drive
3. Fidget Spinner of Doom
4. Minimalist USB C emergency cable(Just wanted to share some of the odd things I've found recently. Teen me would have put those buttons on EVERYTHING ... you never know!)

@futurebird I was laughing and pounding the table at the fidget spinner meteor hammer though because I know EXACTLY the type of person who would own this thing

@catmisgivings @futurebird this is a wild tangent but I went to some rough schools, and I remember once in like sixth grade it was some kid’s birthday and they brought a cake. The substitute teacher wasn’t sure how to portion it out and he unthinkingly asked if anyone had a knife.
*click click click click click* around the room. The sub went very pale and quiet, and said he had to go do something else, and we could figure out the cake while he was gone.

There is something endlessly appealing to me about "secret emergency tools"
I have learned that a knife (a normal sized one) can be useful... but my many mini folding scissors which I put on everything have come in clutch far more often.
I always have scissors, most basic tools, small pliers and a knife. Because life is an adventure.

I have an uncle who is also a math teacher and he taught in PA in one of those places where no one shows up to school on the first day of deer hunting season.
Every kid had a knife. Like a camping knife.

... can't bring ants on the plane... plane's kitchen is probably infested with crazy ants, the seats have bedbugs and there are three species of roaches.
But *I'm* the problem.

What that plane needed were some spiders and snakes to balence the ecosystem.

@futurebird Number 1 reminds me of a puzzling piece of trade show swag: a company branded plastic “key” that was actually a tiny box cutter for your keychain. It had a metal blade, not a safe ceramic blade. I forget whether this was before or after 9/11.

@gbargoud I've had my eye on the Leatherman Raptor shears.

My wife got a pair of these scissors that look kind of like glasses when folded for her knitting bag and they're pretty cool:
I have this multitool on my keychain and was tightening the bolts on a high chair at a restaurant just a couple of hours ago:
6-Bit Hex Wrench Multi-Tool
The new Wolf Tooth 6-Bit Hex Wrench is a slim, strong multi-tool with 11 functions for common bike repairs and everyday needs. Six hex bits are stored inside the handles that fit into the end of a ball detent swivel head for use. It is small enough to fit into a riding tool wrap or pocket, and has an optional key ring attachment to fit on any keychain for use away from the bike.

@futurebird @gbargoud sewing scissors as your EDC is such a flex

@futurebird @gbargoud have you seen the swords hidden in a (walking) cane? Those are cool af and I always check thrift store canes to see if they unscrew and have magic inside.

@futurebird a keyring USB-C cable seems like it might get use turning a personal phone into a useful desktop environment (plugging it into a monitor like some dongle and relying on the monitor's built-in USB hub for keyboard and mouse input).
