I've been avoiding all coverage of the non-event like the plague. I just can't deal with people being serious, sober, solemn and somber over this.

I don't even want to be serious about wondering if it was "fake" or not. I do not care about these people. I do not care.

But, I *have* wondered what sort of funny things happened. 👀

If you are in the same boat the Humanist Report has given this topic the coverage it deserves. The tone is perfect.

Basically he treats is like the "glossy pages" treat any social event with famous people, going over all of the gossip.

I don't know why this even has spiked my distaste for media so sharply. For the past few days if I hear a news show start mentioning the shooting I turn it off so fast. If I see a post or link about it I scroll away.

      Anyone else have this reaction?

Normally I don't mind listening to the "news" but I've just not wanted to encounter the ritualistic sympathy and the "and that's why you have to do whatever they want now" reaction.

@futurebird Because it was a press event, all the Media People feel like it could have been them; after all, for around two hundred of them, it was

This results in a breathless quality to the reporting...because they can empathize with the nearly-victims this time, where they couldn't do that with, say, a million Gazans

For example Bruce Springsteen was giving a concert when this happened and started with a prayer that the president was safe.

And you know? That's fine. Everyone should be safe. I get his reaction probably only hearing "there was an assassination attempt on the president" the normal reaction is "that is awful"

But we aren't in a normal place are we? A lot of people are mad at the boss over this. Which is also a little tacky.

          And yet understandable.

I'm not mad at Springsteen for saying he was glad the president was safe. But, I also don't want to hear it or participate.

I keep coming back to "bomb them back into the stone age" I keep hearing those words. It's not appropriate to treat a person so devoid of human compassion and so detached from reality with kid gloves when you know that if someone shot you or me dead this man would giggle and clap like a child.

I really resent how these kinds of people have forced me to hate them. I don't enjoy hating people. I want to find another way.

But that impulse is clownish at this juncture. It's madness. Perhaps God may heal their souls but I am not God and that is beyond me.

Exactly. But I do feel like I need to at least track if this will make some people crazy in new ways or not. If it's going to create more danger for people I care about it as they spin narratives.

@futurebird yes. I tend, and have tended for a long while now, to scroll away from most that appears at first glance to come from the trump or pro trump sector.

@futurebird it's so infuriating. How many bazillion guns in this country and none of these assholes can pull off a simple assassination? Tetsuya Yamagami had to build a gun from scratch to kill Shinzo Abe, this country is a fucking joke.

I can understand that! For me, I see how these events barely move the needle anymore. We heard about how the Kirk murder was going to change everything, but as far as I can tell it hasn’t at all. But maybe that is bc I’m not plugged into that world. I read the news rather than watching it, which helps a lot in removing myself from the reality TV feeling of it all. My Mastodon friends also supply me with good articles. Grateful to be here!

                                  You sum it up nicely.

After having them seen instigate so much violence, and their disregard for its victims, it's really hard to feel anything for them.

Seeing them try to instrumentalize the event for their political gain makes me sick. Heck, even if they did nothing, it would still feel like a distraction from all the other shit they are pulling.

Yesterday it was the security needs of the ballroom, today it’s No Kings! So much flailing around. I wish the press spent more of their time covering real active harms inflicted by this admin.

I really resent how these kinds of people have forced me to hate them. I don't enjoy hating people. I want to find another way.

But that impulse is clownish at this juncture. It's madness. Perhaps God may heal their souls but I am not God and that is beyond me.

@futurebird I feel much the same. I disliked hating G.W.'s admin so much, but at least my anger was limited to just a relative handful in that administration based on their flawed (IMO) worldview. Now, there's not even a worldview; it's just bile and venom all the way down for the sake of it. And it's coming from not only the administration itself but everyone who continues to support it. I have to be *completely* intolerant of them for my and my wife's physical and emotional safety!

And it's starting to sound like the "assassin" might not have even fired first or at all.

I could see some guy getting in a shouting match with a maga head security guard and maybe flashing a gun and then our keystone cops overreact and shoot (and also miss) and this is all happening on another floor from where Trump is. But since shots were fired we have to have this "harrowing tale of how the president survived an attempt on his life"

At least this time it doesn't seem like it was "friendly fire" so many of the other shooters have been former maga, this guy isn't though maybe. Although my trust is in the toilet. A manifesto? A nice little document to explain everything.

                                          I guess it can happen.
