Having my first Jamaican patty and

Blown away by how good but also how it’s almost exactly the same as Indian Muslim style curry puff

@skinnylatte when you get back in town, check out Back-A-Yard whenever you're down in the South Bay. It's a popular Jamaican restaurant with 5 locations. The closest one to SF is their original closet sized location in Menlo Park.

    I love their Jamaican patties.

@skinnylatte despite the normal explosion of nationalism about food I tend to regard it as a good record of trade links and migrations (forced or otherwise). Though sometimes it's convergent evolution.

I know there was a lot of indentured south asian labour to the Caribbean. I don’t know that much about where they were from but it’s clear from the spices in the meats used in the Jamaican patties, probably close to wherever the Indian Muslims in Singapore / Malaysia are from. It’s almost exactly the same. The type of dough as well (different from the empanada style.. the kind that’s flaky but not buttery)

I was also very happy when I found a frozen Pakistani samosa product that was exactly the same style

            Other food connections:

In the late 00s I spent a lot of time in the Gulf / Levant (UAE, Oman, Lebanon etc)

I liked how good and fresh the food was but it felt.. fundamentally different from some flavours and spices I missed a lot.

When I got to Yemen, I felt so happy that the food was exactly what I was missing. Non-Chinese Singaporean / Malaysian / Indonesian flavours are heavily influenced by Yemeni flavours, particularly that from Hadramout. Due to centuries of trade and migration from Yemen.

Like when I saw ‘mandi’ I was like oh I guess that’s where ‘nasi mandi’ comes from.

@mayintoronto yeah many were also brought to Malaysia as indentured labour.

Some of the derogatory terms there for lower caste South Asians still refer to the sound of the ankle chains 😕

                      @skinnylatte I love Jamaican patties

the ones I grew up eating in Florida were probably not necessarily the best examples of them but I really liked them a lot

and yeah they definitely seem to be a fusion of British pasties and curry

@skinnylatte I believe many of them were shipped to the Caribbean from the port of Kolkata - then called Calcutta - in what is now West Bengal, by the East India Company who had a major base in that port. I don't know any more details than that, which I picked up as an aside when researching a different subject.

Jamaican patty is one of those great Canadian compromises.

                            ‘

Patty vs. Patty tells the story of Toronto’s bizarre 1985 “patty wars,” when Jamaican-Canadian bakers went head-to-head with the federal government over the name of their beloved beef patty.

@HighlandLawyer I once had a macaroni pie and haggis roll. The red onion chutney really pulled it together. 😋@skinnylatte

That's a posh version, the usual accoutrement would be "a wee dod o broon sauce".
