I spent the morning being prodded and poked in preparation for getting a something stuck down my throat to look around.
I am hesitant to get this procedure because of the potential exposure to whatever is floating around at the hospital.
I asked that my providers mask. They said that was a reasonable request but couldn't promise anything.
The person doing my screening also suggested that because I will be under general anesthesia it would be a good idea to get a colonoscopy. Kind of a twofer.
    What a deal!
As tempting as it was I said no thank you.
I felt like I was shopping for a used car.
Summer gave me a look when I recounted my adventure.
She says next time I should try going to her vet who hands out treats and scritches ears.
    I will think about it.
    Good morning, Mastodon.

@NorcalGma2 It is ridiculous that hospital staff don't mask as a matter of course. I hope your providers will. Is the procedure soon?

@NorcalGma2 Monty used to love all the vets he met. One had to remove a foxtail from his leg. Although he is polite to her, he isn't friendly! Ah well

                  Lovely Summer.
I'd almost be tempted by the twofer deal, especially because if there's likely to be a need later that's 2 potential exposure events, not one. But I have heard the prep is quite a few days of not fun. Could you look into the various things Covid conscious people do to try and layer protections? The ones I know of include various mouth washes and nasal sprays, plus dosing up on antihistamines. I got lucky with my recent general anaesthetic, and came away without any hospital acquired infections. Crossing fingers that you do too, and that the results are reassuring.

I asked about the nose spray and they asked me to not use it or antihistamines. Nothing except Tylenol for 4 days before the procedure.

In addition to the muffins you will no doubt bring, what if you made yourself a laminated sign to pin to your gown that says 'I do not consent to have anyone present without a respirator'?

You might find a better way to phrase that, but 'I do not consent' may be important in a medical context

You still don't get any guarantees about what will happen when you are unconscious, of course. But they won't be able to say they didn't know

                                Especially after the procedure

@NorcalGma2 It’s always worth having both procedures, and if you get them done in quick succession while under the one anasthetic it makes it even better. I have colonoscopies regularly and they remove any little nodules they find. It means I don’t develop bowel cancer. I don’t have the gastroscope as often, although I suffer from a hiatus hernia and osoephegal ulcers, which I’ve got medication for. Currently on the waiting list for another gastroscope. Hope all will be well for you. 💖

                                      @NorcalGma2

Once you have the appointment set up at the hospital, you can call them and ask if you can be assured that everyone who cares for you will be masked.

I did that in 2024--every time I talked with anyone at the hospital about my procedure--and they agreed to do that. I did have to remind one person (the doctor doing the procedure!!!) that I wanted people masked, but everyone did mask for me...

Summer is looking like she hopes no one ever proposes that she have a colonoscopy!
