The hope I used to have that *surely* the education sector won't embrace these tools designed for plagiarism & cheating.... was sorely naive.

@syntaxseed teachers don’t like ai because the kids are using it to cheat, but they love using ChatGPT to write emails for them. They assign shit assignments that use the “art” ai. Or one they love is to compare how an LLM did on creating a timeline in the name of media literacy.
It doesn’t help that it’s coming down from the boards either. “Use this great tool to create your tests and slides! You’ll have far more time to spend with the students!”
There has been no thought into environmental impacts, or hallucinations. It’s bleak in education right now.

Son came home today telling me about a class assignment in which he feels pressured by his teacher to use #AI to do a large part of it. And worried that his own work will look "ugly" if he doesn't. He's in grade 6.

So now we're teaching our kids that AI not only can do their thinking for them, but that their own creativity sucks in comparison.

Wrote a long email to the administration that I'm going to sleep on for now because I'm furious & heartbroken.

@syntaxseed oh no, I'm sorry to hear it has got so deep even in the lower grades.

I'm taking a quarter off from teaching 100-level college classes, and possibly won't return, because of a similar reason. It was heartbreaking / infuriating / plain annoying to see students loose their own voice and self, while at the same time having admin sending surveys about how were we implementing AI in the curriculum, and slowly seeing faculty move further and further towards that.

@LibraryAndTea Absolutely!! 💯 I can't believe that everyone in any kind of decision making capacity doesn't see that

ChatGPT, make my slides for me
        becomes
        Write my paper for me
        becomes
        Do my research for me
        becomes
ChatGPT who should I vote for?
        becomes
        Tell me you love me
        etc etc

I have zero hope that the teachers or administration will listen to me or even read my entire letter (why bother, have #AI summarize it for you!) but I'm just at such a loss.

Our kids are going to be guinea pigs in the most potentially devastating experiment humanity has ever conducted on itself. WHAT IF IT'S NOT F**KING GREAT?? What if we DO create a generation with absolutely broken critical thinking & problem solving skills???

@syntaxseed This is the number 1 issue I have with schools adopting AI so quickly. Imagine if in 2009 schools were like "we think social media is going to be very important in the future so we are mandating all classes use Facebook" and how we are still only *now* learning just how negatively social media affects people (and children in particular).

That's the whole point. Critical thinking makes for less controllable people who question authority. That's why Texas keeps trying to ban teaching it.

@syntaxseed The other 'fun' thing is my older kid (year 7 - first year of secondary school in the UK) is complaining that his teachers are increasingly using AI to both plan lessons, set, and EVALUATE home work.

All whilst they are prohibited from using AI (and of course many still use it).

Not sure whether that is better or worse than your experience…

@michael Oh I have no doubt that many teachers are all-in on using it themselves. Who can resist a simple shortcut?

My son says his teacher uses AI for a lot of her own needs. But I'm in a position with this school where I have to be very careful about criticizing the teachers specifically. So I'm going to start with registering my concerns to the principal & opting my own kids out of it's use.

@syntaxseed Yup. As a professor in a graduate program, I expect to be long since retired before these folks reach my level…. While my university is doing a good job at embracing/teaching ‘responsible’ AI, I shudder to think what kids are being taught (or not taught) at the lower levels of education and what bodes for the future workforce and future adults.

@syntaxseed I feel so bad for people (kids especially) thinking it's unacceptable to not look like you're good at things. And that really is the issue: AI doesn't make you good at things, it just might make you *look* like you are - it's a lying tool that encourages dependence.

@syntaxseed That is terrible. At the very least hopefully you can help your son feel like he doesn't have to use AI. The whole adoption of AI by so many people just makes me depressed at this point.

We are literally just going to turn into the people in Wall-E the direction society is heading.

@syntaxseed Do you know what the objective of the lesson is? There may be legitimate reasons related to AI literacy or AI fluency, but without knowing the objective of the lesson, it's hard to judge. Hopefully the students aren't learning that it's just easier to use AI all the time. Cognitive struggle is important.
You could always ask to see the teacher's lesson plan...
