‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks

Karen Newton was in America on the trip of a lifetime when she was shackled, transported and held for weeks on end. With tourism to the US under increasing strain, she says, ‘If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone’

US citizen here. Why would anyone from outside this fucked up country run by a racist, fascist, government, knowing that there is a very real possibility of this happening, come here for any reason?

Over the past couple of hundred years we, Europeans, have persuaded a lot of our own idiots to seek happiness in USA. But not all of them could afford the trip back then!

Their children and grand children, and so on (those we're still trying to clean out of our gene pool) are still happily visiting the promised land for vacation!

        On a side note:
We don't really mind you keeping them there for a while. I mean, if your REALLY feel like you need to lock someone up...

@publictorsten You’re astonished that a British man with a British passport was traveling? He wasn’t expecting to re-enter the US, it’s absurd that after being forced to because of Canadian customs he is then incarcerated in the US when he was literally TRYING to leave it.

@slyborg You've added some details to the story there.

It's possible to leave the US this way, but your car rental company has to do some paper work beforehand. Since this was not the case, he could not enter Canada with his car. Why would that be so? The most plausible explanation: He did want to re-enter the US.

@slyborg You've added some details to the story there.

It's possible to leave the US this way, but your car rental company has to do some paper work beforehand. Since this was not the case, he could not enter Canada with his car. Why would that be so? The most plausible explanation: He did want to re-enter the US.

@publictorsten It’s stated in the article that he planned to return to the UK to retire, partly out of frustration with being unable to secure permanent residency. I remain astonished that we’re arguing over his itinerary when the issue is that he was imprisoned for more than a month over an expired visa with no criminal history. Deporting the man immediately would have been harsh but understandable, locking him up AND his wife with valid paperwork is inexplicable.

Karen Newton was in America on the trip of a lifetime when she was shackled, transported and held for weeks on end. With tourism to the US under increasing strain, she says, ‘If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone’

@slyborg Maybe I should be happy that other people finally begin to see the inexplicable. Like this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_Alcatraz
