@rasterweb Yes indeed. I am with you 💯
I also hear things like: comparing Ai to the introduction of the calculator and the computer, and how people who resisted learning to use it couldn’t compete with people who learned how to use it. That argument is flawed from the beginning because Ai is not an effective “tool”, and certainly not now. If we had responsible people working on it instead of “gathering data” which adds to the slop, it could start to be a “tool”. Not to mention other problems 🫩

And even if it were effective, that's a terrible argument.

I learned how to use a computer using a BBC model B. Yes, some of the things I learned there are still relevant. But I have worked with people my age who learned a decade later and have no disadvantage.

People who jumped on technology bandwagons later often have an easier time. They don't have to keep relearning things that rapidly change. While the technology is being deployed, they are solving real problems. Once the technology reaches a generally useful point with some stable features, they can jump on and adopt it at a much lower cost than the early adopters.

Look at the eCommerce boom, for example. A very small number of companies like eBay and Amazon did very well from being early adopters but a lot of the early adopters crashed and burned. In contrast, a lot of companies jumped in after the .com crash and built sustainable business models and did very well. In the UK, the supermarket that adopted online ordering earliest was Tesco (they were on Compuserve!). The two with the largest market share are Lidl and Ocado, neither of which entered that market for the first decade.

Oh my! This is a terrific argument! I’m not very good with countering arguments because I tend to get hung up on my own “facts” and then lose momentum when someone puts a fact in front of me that I haven’t done due diligence to know much about it. (Like the one I mentioned earlier). Thank you! This is perfect to add to my arsenal of counterpoints when I meet someone saying “how wonderful Ai is, etc. etc. ” 😹

We can see that the people speaking out about ICE and data centers is having an effect. Public opinion still matters, at least as long as we have (publicly) elected officials who are (supposed to be) beholden to their constituents.

Let those fuckers know where you stand. Make noise, say it loudly, and repeat it so they cannot ignore it.

It’s easy to feel hopeless, but remember, we outnumber them. They cannot exist without us. We have the power… we just need to use it.

@rasterweb public opinion does actually influence how companies decide product lines, at least when the company isn't all in cultists about the technology. And they are noticing the anti-AI backlash.

@rasterweb it's also just lazy. I don't think neural net-based technologies are going away. But there are a million different ways it being "here to stay" can look like, not all of them are most of the population being underpaid maintenance workers in server farms while a few privileged white collar workers get to play LLM roulette all day.

@rasterweb I’ve been thinking about this a lot the past few days, that people accept things because they think they’re powerless as an individual against a big corporation or government. It’s crazy to me how the internet made it easier for people to network, but it’s rarely used to unite people to push to make the world better, even for things that the vast majority agree should happen. Instead, it’s used for memes and harassment. (1/2)

Has the progress of humanity (less disease, poverty, war, etc.) all been because of the tiny minority of people who actually try to make the world better? What would happen if even half of people actually tried? (2/2)

@rasterweb to be honest those article also completly miss the point as many AI hater do.

In some case AI is there and will not disapear (Millitary, grammar correction etc).

It's the generative par in Gen AI that is a thing that must disapear.

Because when it come to analyse existing data AI is a god, when it come to generate new data it's shit.

I’ve seen a lot of articles and posts about AI that use the term “like it or not” as in “like it or not, AI is here, and we might as well get used to it” and that is such bullshit.

Like it or not, ableism is here… like it or not, racism is here… like it or not, fascism is here.

No, fuck that, I will resist. I will speak out. I will fight back.

You do not have to roll over and accept the shit corporations and the existing power structure try to force upon you.

We can build a better world.

                                    @rasterweb 💯.

Not resisting means giving up your mental skills and faculties.

How can we build a better world without racism, fascist and AI replacement of humans?

@rasterweb It always gives me chills how close the AI bro terminology tends to fall from the language used by abusers
