All those songs where men say women were cruel to them—I bet if you asked the woman for her perspective, like 75% of those stories would be about feeling unsafe and trying to let the guy down super gently while backing away with a shaky laugh.

They're where the woman picked the bear.

@batkaren I have recently come to sympathize more with Lucille (Kenny Rogers 1977) than the song expects.
"When the drinks finally hit her she said, "I'm no quitter"
But I finally quit livin' on dreams
I'm hungry for laughter and here ever after
I'm after whatever the other life brings"Refrain: "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille"

@batkaren
always thought it must be precarious to be a woman, loads of unwanted attention.. for the most part men dont have to deal with that.... -

@batkaren I mean, yes. But that's part of the artistic effect in popular music, a layer of darkness underneath heightens emotion.
A lot of blues lyrics sound a lot like 'baby I promise I'll never hit you again' and those syrupy 70's disco lyrics work because they sound like the guy cheated and he'll say anything to be let back in the house.
'Let's get married you're so hot' sounds flat, 'I've been watching you for so long, I'm going to make you mine' works better (and IRL would be exhibit a).

@batkaren And all those oldie timy songs about women being interested in how much money a man has before deciding to marry him don't take into account the prostitutional nature of patriarchal marriage, and how who she chose dictated her entire life.
