But that's part of the artistic effect in popular music, a layer of darkness underneath heightens emotion.

A lot of blues lyrics sound a lot like 'baby I promise I'll never hit you again' and those syrupy 70's disco lyrics work because they sound like the guy cheated and he'll say anything to be let back in the house.
