May 5, 2025 – Abelardo Avelleneda-Delgado, 68, died in ICE custody while being transported from a local jail to federal detention.

The first detainee to die in this manner in at least a decade, Avelleneda-Delgado had lived in the US for almost forty years and raised a large family while working on tobacco and vegetable farms.

His family said he had no prior health conditions and was not taking any medications. However, after his arrest, Avelleneda-Delgado’s condition deteriorated at the Lowndes County Jail in Valdosta, Georgia.

He began using a wheelchair and was unable to speak to his family during a visit. A staff member then informed a family member that Avelleneda-Delgado’s condition was likely caused by medications he was taking at the jail.

On May 5, Avelleneda-Delgado became unresponsive with high blood pressure while in transit.

“If [he had high blood pressure] when he left Lowndes, he shouldn’t have been going to Stewart. He should’ve been going to the hospital,” said Steven D. Hubbard, the county coroner. Avelleneda-Delgado’s healthcare and transportation were handled by Southern Health Partners and CoreCivic, both private companies.
