In my opinion AI isn't as controversial as many on mastodon seem to think. Capitalist company gonna capitalism and an AI workstation was such a desired niche product that they sold out instantly and were batched out for a while.
I also am not a fan of these kinds of profit-minded decisions but I'm not sure what the realistic alternative is within this current system.
@komali_2 @alerque @frameworkcomputer Even if we take the controversy around AI out of the equation (and it indeed is one for a myriad of reasons, the culture on Mastodon just looks at it from a certain perspective; go to a town near a datacenter and it quickly becomes about QoL, polution and prices)… it's still utter nonsense to abandon the whole reason your company exists. Repairability and modularity literally are the only reason Framework is a thing.

@Natanox @alerque @frameworkcomputer I mean, I hear you, but it was physically impossible to achieve the requisite RAM speeds without soldering it. Every other component is replaceable. You can't replace the chips on laptop boards either, sometimes there's just physical realities that prevent a perfect adherence to values.

@komali_2 @alerque @frameworkcomputer But that assumes they *had* to do it for some other reason. Otherwise… they could've just made a really awesome, really well maintainable and repairable compact desktop PC. Sometimes you literally can't adhere to values because of the situation or outside forces, obviously… but it would be news to me something forced them to make a desktop PC with focus on AI given their laptops already sold really well.

@komali_2 @alerque @frameworkcomputer Gaming is no argument since nothing forced them to use this chipset at all. They could've also centered the machine around a Mini-ITX board with dedicated GPU in some super-compact form factor (e.g. low profile or single slot height with PCIe riser) which would provide equal or better gaming performance. The only real reason it *had* to be this chipset I can think of is AI workload.
Like, I understand where you're coming from… but it didn't have to be this.

it is not the same reason. The knife repair guy refused to repair nazi devotionals. He wouldn't have known if the customers came with a normal kitchen knife and happened to be nazis.
Because the equivalent in terms of Hyprland and Omarchy would be if the software opened a terminal with a spinning Hakenkreuz on every boot, but this isn't the case, the software itself doesn't propagate anything comparable.
If the knife repair guy operated like parts of the free software community the comparison would be as follows:
- store closed until you knock on the door and fill out a form with anything you ever said online filled in
- repair guy refuses service because you made a racist joke 11 years ago
- shares everything you ever said online with all small business in the world and expect them to do the same
I haven't looked into the Hyprland dev. Omarchy devs xenophobic views were shared *on his personal blog* and as far as I looked into it don't appear to endorse anything related to neonazi ideology. As long as there is no proof of him denying capable contributors on account of race there is nothing about his views that affects free software or open hardware in a direct negative fashion. Now compare that to the amount of witch hunters criticizing Framework for their business decisions while using and paying for Microsoft Windows, a product that is factually accumulating profit for a corporation dedicated to imperialist war, genocide, unfreedom of users and workers and fusion with a surveillance deep state. The way free software will eat itself in purity spirals while leaving alone the big fish (even getting money from them often) demonstrates how FAGMAN probably infested it with spies and paid troublemakers and it's working out perfectly. -

@freechelmi @frameworkcomputer no it’s just a measuring point that can be made for comparison. Something the layman can understand versus some obscure battery benchmark. Apple uses similar examples.

@freechelmi @frameworkcomputer currently no. Only Wildvine L3, software DRM on Linux in browser. It’s not something Framework can fix. Good question though.
