    Which email provider would you currently recommend to a family member (if you don't want to host the emails yourself)? Low volume, couple of GB of storage. Paid options okay.

    @blinry mailbox.
    Did choose mailbox over posteo couple years ago because own domain.
    Am pretty happy since then.
    Big plus for mailbox is that I can talk to bunch of mailbox team yearly in person at CLT.

          @kura @blinry i can personally recommend tutanota, works well and has additional options for further securing email (though keep in mind those options are tuta-specific and may not always be supported on the other end)

            @blinry Mailbox.org. Simple and does not require any weird app for access. Plain and stupid IMAP access is provided (and a web interface)

            Also it's hosted in Europe, they have their own data centers and a long history of email hosting.

                        @blinry
                        Ich bin jetzt seit einigen Jahren bei mailbox.org und rundum zufrieden.
                        Das ist so eine Einschalten-Geht Lösung.

                        Seinerzeit hatte ich auch noch parallel Posteo und Tutanota getestet, die sind aber damals mit eher schlechtem Support und Ahnungslosigkeit aufgefallen, insofern hatte ich die schnell wieder von der Liste gestrichen.

                          I convinced two family members to switch to Posteo.

                          Otherwise Tutamail.

                                      @blinry I’ve been happy with Fastmail.

                                      If your family member is not a technical person and they’re ok with depending on you, having a dedicated domain can make switching providers painless.

                                      The obvious caveat is that they become dependent on you, which can be terrible for several reasons even if you’re the nicest person on earth.

                                          @Bobo_PK @blinry second that. Made the switch from gmail a couple month ago and didn't regret it. Only caveat is finding a good mobile client. At least on Android, the standard Gmail client is a lot less cumbersome than K9. So that might be a conversation to have to manage expectations.
