my frankencactus (holiday cactus with different varieties grafted on) always gets very confused with the lighting changes caused by the Christmas tree. now it's flowering again. usually the buds on the red segments blast and fall off, but i got a red flower this time.

if plant nerds want to start experimenting with grafting, i highly recommend grafting a Thanksgiving cactus. due to the succulent nature of the 'leaves' (technically stem segments), the grafts are quite likely to take, as the biggest killer of graft sites in simply drying out.

i have grafted Easter cactus pieces to my Thanksgiving cactus; other, more ambitious growers have even grafted seemingly unrelated cactus species onto them. it turns out that cactuses are not that different from each other genetically, so seemingly impossible matches can prove compatible.
