I'd rather go again as a sailor not a tourist. But, I enjoyed a vacation there only once, with the kids. long ago. I saw quite a bit in one visit -

(1) Stay in the prison camps ("resorts") along the north coast (the armed guards on the gates are there to keep the inmates in as far as we could work out). Leave the compound only on guided tours.
(2) Rent a car (4WD advised if there's been a hurricane recently), stay in village B&Bs and do your own thing. Yeah, OK, do take local advice about where not to go on your own seriously.
We prefer (2).

We had kids, so we couldn't get too risky. We were in Trelawny resort, geared to couples with children. They supervised their swimming and play activities so you could relax. But, that's fake JA, the perfectly braided dreadlocks on the nightly bands, staff all clean shaven, but down the beach was a Rastafarian Bamboo Village, I used to go there early morning when they were reasoning. Rented a car, all stick shift, on the right, and we went into Kingston, Negril Beach, picked up a hitchhiker going up in the mountains and dropped him off near Mandeville, I think. Another guy standing at the sign that reads, person on the trail is not a real guide, and the not real guide became our guide and we had fun.
He lowered his voice making my kids giggle when he said, this is FEERRRN GULLY FERN GULLY! and told us movies had been made there because of the vines and jungle like environment. He got a vine in Dunn River falls and the kids each took a swing, and he picked honeysuckle and told them to taste it -

and this was a decade before digital but I have all the photos. then, we went right into Kingston downtown, market, bought more touristy stuff, and the car was still there so I wanted to see TRENCHTOWN, the place Bob speaks of in his song. Well, it's not much more than tin shacks leaning against each other and squatting in the road, but it narrows from two lane width to one, with people on both sides and no turning, and we had to back out from the end, trying not to be surprised by a kid jumping out or waiting for someone to have a pee in the ditch so we could go beyond , Crime is often driven by poverty not personality and these are good folk that are terribly poor. You will lose your Levis if you get outBut nothing but the memories. On the way to Montego Bay, there's always someone jumping in front of your car to sell you something. I stopped at a place that didn;t do that, to get some Mangos, and they were the large ones, the size of coconuts, and the best taste,,

I've been to places, usually in the tropical tourist areas, like Florida, they will support each other, such as directions to the next gas pump might seem off the beaten track but cousin Bubba owns that pump and they send all tourists that way.
St Pierre et Miquelon is a bit like that too. Once you know where to go, the tourist game is up. -

We did not go to "dodgy" bits of Kingston other than in a taxi - the driver told us not to try walking around there.
Once we'd stopped to look at something in the middle of the countryside. And this vehicle pulls up by us - some old thing along the lines of a Ford Capri, though not that exactly. There were four lads in it who asked if we were OK, had we broken down, we needed to be careful out here because "there are baaaad people around".
Leaving me wondering whether they were warning us that they themselves were baaaad people, but had chosen to leave us alone that day.
What my wife had noticed but I hadn't was that between the two lads on the back seat of the car was a tiny grandma. If I'd seen her I'd have known for sure that we were perfectly safe - even if they were bad lads they weren't going to do anything bad with grandma watching!

I knew some folks in Bermuda and after a club closed they said they would call me a cab. But I had come by bike. The lady asked where I left the bike, and she said, it's probably not there now.. but I had chained it to the church, so there!

@TimWardCam @Rasta Many years ago a friend and daughter went down and we talked every day while daughter was with friends and she had a car and traveled the coast and did tours like Applegate distillery and food had to be watched as well as water ...
