Most people don't realize how easy it would be for the separatists to take over the UCP and the Alberta government right now.
They've put out a call for all their supporters to purchase UCP memberships. If they truly have the majority of the party, they can then call for a leadership review.
I'm sure there are some rules they'd have to follow but depending on what they are, they could find a way to vote Danielle Smith out as leader (as was done with Jason Kenney).
Assuming she doesn't just declare herself fully a separatist in a bid to keep her job.
If that didn't happen, the separatists could install an interim leader. Smith was the interim leader after Kenney and was unelected initially. A month later, she ran and won in a by-election but served as a Premier without a seat in the Legislature until then.
She then took her sweet time before calling a general election, serving without a mandate for six months. That didn't stop her from making big changes.

@JEmphatically what do you mean would be. They are totally steering the party.

All this to say, none of this cast of characters care if they do what the majority wants.
They want to do what they want to do.
Which is destroy the province...and probably also the country.
Perhaps Smith is settling an old score with a province that turfed her out in disgrace all those years ago when she crossed the floor from the Wildrose to the PC's. I wrote about it at the time and warned she would be back, with some scores to settle.
And well, she always has her place in Panama. The extradition treaty with Canada does not include offences that are "political."

@Cass_m You're right and now that they have the voter data, they can turn their efforts to contacting those people to buy UCP memberships and separate without even having a referendum. They've already said they have no intention of following the rules or the constitution. What a mess.
