A teenager complained their guitar cable is sticky. "I can just run it through the washing machine, right? maybe with some other stuff so it doesn't bang around?"
Silence. I am momentarily dumbfounded.
Teenager is not comfortable with silence. "I do it with my USBs all the time."
All I've got is more silence.
@geoffduncan [open mouthed staring at screen] That is either the worst idea or the best idea I've ever heard.
I mean... if you use one of these clothes nets that one uses for delicate laundry. And if you dry it out thoroughly...
I might try that.

when I first started my phone tech job our in house repairperson would always start by taking the circuit board to the sink and giving it a good rinse.
.
I guess the point is as long as the thing isn't powered up at the time.

Funny stuff.

@punishmenthurts @geoffduncan I need to look into this Rutles business. Sounds much like Spinal Tap - which I adore.

not entirely sure that's where I saw that gag, and it was surely only a clip I saw, I haven't actually seen the Rutles either
.
and I don't have another memory of it from Spinal Tap, so maybe that was it. Sorry. -

@geoffduncan This reply is written by someone who puts dirty synthesizer circuit boards in the dish washer.

@geoffduncan "all the time" what are they doing to their usb cables?
Though have put stuff in the dishwasher before 'cos it's the big box of making things clean

As the conversation recovered, they apparently run their USB C charging cable for their phone with their favorite hoodies in the laundry "every week." I don't know how it's survived—I mean, those things fail on me if I look at those things with anything less than undying devotion. -

I have—I've played a lot of bars and similar venues over the years—but the worst one wa a braided cable that a studio assistant duct taped to the floor for some unknown reason. The adhesive never really came off of that one and it would just accumulate pet fur, dust, and general crap until I "retired" it.
