So well encapsulated. I am privileged enough, in my old age, to have had a working life where I could save enough to think of myself as comfortably off. I own a house - finally - and I can do the things that are listed.
I feel that I have enough. And sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy - because saying 'I have enough' seems like the most impossible thing to say in our society.
For me, having enough to be able to give IS exactly the measure of 'rich'.

I feel that I have enough. And sometimes I wonder if I'm crazy - because saying 'I have enough' seems like the most impossible thing to say in our society.
For me, having enough to be able to give IS exactly the measure of 'rich'.
That is a monumental pleasure, isn't it? To be able to help, to donate, to support, without risking falling into a precarious financial situation?
The weird thing is, when I was growing up, in what was a pretty comprehensive welfare state, many, many people felt this way.

@Twiteryeanot It's so weird. It seems like I was almost living in another reality. But when I was much younger, I had to spend a while on government assistance. And even then, I still felt capable of giving something to someone on the street. Because I didn't feel like the next cheque might be the last money I had.
I really do believe in social safety nets. They do something to people's psyches - they give them a sense of being able to share without fear.

@Remittancegirl @Twiteryeanot My wife and I have received a substantial level of care and generosity from strangers via crowd-funding over the past few years — we are not eligible for state-funded safety nets as our residence status in the EU and elsewhere is non-existent — and although our situation is constantly precarious, we find the means to share what resources we have with others (it's rarely onerous).

I'm really glad to hear that you got some help. But I really do wish governments would realise just how socially beneficial it is for people to feel safe. -
@Twiteryeanot I agree.
And while there always are people who take more than they need, I still think that a system that makes people feel safe, in terms of basic needs, is a greater good that overrides the obsession with 'fraudsters'.
