@taffypeppers @jonah I will say even with the spoilers, it stuck with me for about a week. I def can't wait to ruin someone else's day with it though. "You haven't seen Aniara? Bruh. Unrelated question: are you the kind of person who likes to wallow in their depression or do you want bad news while you're feeling good to help dull the sting?"

@taffypeppers @jonah Recs: Oldboy for sure. Not really scifi but it's also a gut punch. Don't spoil it. Just brace yourself.

I hear Bring Her Back is brutal. Hereditary and Midsommar. Se7en. Sinister. Shutter Island. Upgrade really stayed with me. I've heard amazing things about The Lightouse and The Witch (2015) but haven't seen either yet.

@taffypeppers @jonah If you don't mind EXTREMELY graphic torture porn, I hear the ending of Martyrs is rough. I'm still trying to decide if that one has enough artistic merit for me to watch it. Some people criticize it as pointless torture porn but others argue it has real artistic merit and I can't tell from the Wikipedia page alone.

@taffypeppers @jonah I don't know about how some of them end but for TV shows I hear The Boys is a tough watch at times, Handmaid's Tale is bleak af (and turning into a documentary by the day), Mr Robot has happy ending but some of the plot points are fucking depressing, early Black Mirror hits hard af.

@nateb @jonah Awesome, thanks! I've seen a few of these, e.g.The Lighthouse, Shutter Island, Handmaid's Tale, Black Mirror. I don't remember The Lighthouse much to be honest, but those others were fantastic!

I think that friend group is going to try to do a regular thing like this, so I'll add the ones I haven't seen to the list for us 👍

@taffypeppers @jonah "Me and the homies like to get together and enjoy some soul-crushing depression once in a while for fun" 😂

If I see anything that fits the bill I'll pass it on. I don't think I have anything on the horizon that isn't already listed here (like Bring Her Back) but if I stumble on something.

I don't really seek out "bleak" per se, I just seek out "well-made" and sometimes there's overlap 😂

@nateb @jonah 🤣 I guess I should clarify that we were looking for a regular sci-fi night and we just happened to start with a depressing one haha

@taffypeppers @nateb to add one to the convo—and speaking of Handmaid’s Tale and Black Mirror—I really liked The Invisible Man with Elizabeth Moss

@jonah @taffypeppers Not bleak but totally agree. That movie is such a mindfuck. I spent every single shot wondering if he was in the short or if she was just going completely insane.

                    Absolutely worth a watch. Fantastic.
