8GB of RAM, 2/4 core CPU, no thunderbolt, nerfed display out, 256GB of storage, nerfed LCD.

@codinghorror @paul yes, but had they used the current A19 Pro instead of the A18 Pro then they could've had 12GB, which would've been the sweet spot for this machine

@jonah @codinghorror @paul They don't have a warehouse full of extra A19s to find a use for.

@bradwilson @jonah @codinghorror @paul and it gives them space for an upgrade next year.

@theolodian @bradwilson @jonah @paul if only qualcomm didn't suck beyond all human comprehension, maybe there'd be credible competition. Sadly, that's not the case.

@codinghorror @bradwilson @jonah @paul unfortunately no one can compete with Apple’s integration of software and hardware, and resources.
The next year will be interesting in terms of Europe’s exposure to US tech.

@theolodian @bradwilson @jonah @paul and yet, AMD competed with Intel just fine for a long time. "no one can compete" .. I mean, really?

@codinghorror @bradwilson @jonah @paul the Surface Pro gets BSOD. Really Microsoft?

A lot of people have said "The new MacBook is not for you". I used a MBA 11" during the intel era for several gens. from right after the time they release the non prototype (aka envelope) model through when they nerfed them. Pretty sure the majority of some versions of Tweetbot was developed on one.
I could live with most of the limitations but there's two reasons I won't get one. 8GB is just insanity in 2026 and my MBP M1 Pro is just still too damned good enough for what I do on laptops.
@paul even for “the non tech people who should be buying this” 8gb is insane. My wife has the last touchbar MBP with an M2 and 8gb and it slows to a CRAWL when she opens more than like 8 tabs in Chrome because it’s going to swap

@theolodian @codinghorror @jonah @paul Are you trying to suggest that Macs don't crash? That's naively incorrect.

@bradwilson @codinghorror @jonah @paul certainly a lot less in my experience. I’m no Apple fanboy, but I don’t see anyone else coming along with such a complete ecosystem.

-
@paul I still regret buying the M1 Max and not Pro… Apple made these chips too good, just no reason to upgrade
what's wrong with the max vs the pro?

@paul out of curiosity, when you were using the 11" did you use a monitor most of the time?
-
8GB of RAM, 2/4 core CPU, no thunderbolt, nerfed display out, 256GB of storage, nerfed LCD. I mean the price is great but damn feels like a few too many corners were cut.
@paul I wonder if Apple is going to regularly upgrade these things annually — like, maybe this year's MacBook Neo is nerfed, but maybe next year will be a better buy?

@paul I still want one. And think it would be great for those times I’m out and about and not close to home. Something smaller, more round, and dedicated to getting moderate things done.
-
@paul I think this is because apple’s RAM is part of the SoC for speed, right? I agree with you, however, this is a little bit like complaining you can’t upgrade the level 4 cache on your CPU.
@codinghorror Apple chose the SoC though, the M1 has a similar number of transistors, on an older (assuming cheaper) node, and has 8GB and 16GB versions. That'd let them do the “cheap" 8GB version and offer an upgrade path to 16GB, which we all know Apple loves to have.
-

@taterbase nope, I never use laptops connected to monitors (well maybe once a year, if that).

Since the Neo is half “parts" laptop, would've been kind of hilarious if Apple had released one with a butterfly keyboard.

@paul or if it ran iPadOS lol
