If you need to identify insects please use inaturalist, wikipedia, antwiki, bugguide.net or @alexwild's photo collection.

    You might think:

    waspworld.com/25-types-of-carpenter-ants-identification-with-picture

Sounds like a decent source (who would spread misinformation about ants?) But, it's just another error riddled page that will make people feel hopeless about identifying insects.

Anyway. I know many people will look at this and not be able to tell how wrong it is.

    Two real stinkers:

@futurebird I wonder if it's AI...the site has existed for less than a year (registered from Lithuania?), they post like four blog articles a day all allegedly written by one guy (and it's been several per day since it started)...

I think it's a (pretty bad) SEO scam to get Amazon affiliate revenue. The page with affiliate links to bug killers seemed potentially legit, but then I found one selling and reviewing MATTRESS COVERS...

I keep promising myself I won't do web searches anymore. It's so pointless. But it's a hard habit to break.

"waspworld.com" could be such a fun site. It should be sized by the government and given to me.

And everyone who posts incorrectly identified ants should have to draw a zine BY HAND where the ants are correctly identified and apologize on TV.

@admin @futurebird I've recently found through origami that the old pages with a ton of keywords for SEO have been replaced with a ton of "blogs" that make you waste a few minutes before realising that it's all plausible word salad

Ants are wasps. There is no clade you could name that won’t contain both.

The government has sent several ants to monitor your goings on. Be alert and very careful!

(It’s a really neat game! I’m going to add it to my list of ant simulations to review this summer.)

@futurebird there are swarms of ants in it actually, now I think about it, as one of the bad things that happen to the wasps... we made it quite a long time ago now but it was one of my favourite projects 🙂

This blew my mind the other day,

That some wasps decided probably by nature,

                      To stop flying.

Imagine being able to fly and choosing the ground instead.

                      Also, they can communicate!

Watched ants form a pile the other day and so naturally looked heavily into ants.

I sometimes think speculating if something is AI-generated can be a bit of a trap. I think you are correct that entire site was probably generated using one of those AI WordPress bridges.

But how it was made doesn’t really matter since every single page contains foundational errors. It fails to accomplish the site’s apparent purpose eg. helping people identify insects.

It presents itself with authority, like an encyclopedia, and yet the information is simply wrong. A person who sees a carpenter in their home who attempts to use that page to identify the species will never ever get the correct answe. They will probably assume this is because they don’t know enough about insects when in fact, they are just being farmed by advertisers again.

@ben @futurebird @admin the fucking spam sites have been around a lot longer than folks even begin to comprehend.

The biggest reason I quit blogging was because from 2010 or so, every single one of my posts was within days stolen by SEO scamming operations in India, halfass copy-pasted to a dozen blogspots running ads mixed in with thousands of other often unrelated posts. When I identified and blocked them, they switched to using open proxies.

@futurebird @alexwild After having spent time at two separate search engines, including a couple year stint in the QA/spam detection department of one of them, I am completely unsurprised. It's all ad scamming and pagerank farming, and deeply annoying.

People lie about the earth being flat for religion. People lie about how economics works for political reasons. People lie about famous people to get more fame or be petty, people lie about their company to make money.

Why oh why are you lying about ANTS?

I sometimes think speculating if something is AI-generated can be a bit of a trap. I think you are correct that entire site was probably generated using one of those AI WordPress bridges.

But how it was made doesn’t really matter since every single page contains foundational errors. It fails to accomplish the site’s apparent purpose eg. helping people identify insects.

@futurebird Most likely the site's actual purpose is catching search results and showing ads. Feels like 75% of the internet is like that lately.
