By far the info I miss the most in people's profiles here on Mastodon is your location.

All too often, I see people post something related to their specific countries with zero indication where they are from.

You know where you are from, but unless you tell us, your fellow Mastodonians don't, and your post makes no sense.

No one needs your home address, but to most people it is safe to write at least your country on your profile page.

@randahl once there was a small project called fedikarte.

I liked the idea from the start and joined immediately.

However , unfortunately it was discontinued due to lack of time. It still waits for someone to take over:

Yes, I’ve said this several times. City would nice. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what someone is saying without it.

Flags are mainly used to indicate the language(s) one knows.

@caravantraveller @r4f4l @randahl People use flags or symbols to indicate affiliation is a variety of ways.
So, are you in Kansas or Land of Oz?

@randahl @jurjen_heeck thanks for the reminder, I did! (Found out on our last cycling tour that almost no one recognizes the Dutch flag outside of the Netherlands so that probably isn’t enough)

@randahl I don't know if you follow me, but I don't like to publish my location on my profile. However, I overthink and almost always try to give regional or at least national context before what I'm about to write.

One example, I'm in πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ right now and learning from Canadians, eh; but sometimes I bring my πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ background if it suits what is the discussion about.

@epistomai I fully understand the need for privacy, but I am not sure I understand how writing "Location: Canada" on you profile is worse than writing your location in a public post?
