I learned two things this weekend. One is that Samsung refrigerator/freezers have a “Demo Mode” where everything seems to be running normally, but all the actual cooling functions have been disabled. And the other is that you can activate this mode by leaning against the door the wrong way
Friends w/ Samsung fridges have told me that many repair folks will not touch those refrigerators.

@jalefkowit uncool feature

@jalefkowit wait, what? They ship their actual consumers models with a built in demo mode?
We live in the age of insanity
@machias @jalefkowit wait, what? They ship their actual customers models built with bullshit touchscreens that can fuck up refrigeration?
It's like touchscreens are the regexps for appliances, "now you have two problems".

@jalefkowit Remember when appliances just did what they were supposed to do?
-
@CppGuy Presumably yes, but never underestimate Samsung’s ability to design something poorly
Can confirm. We have a Samsung stove that's a continual source of annoyance because of bad design decisions.

What is it demoing if all the function is off?

@jalefkowit @machias
I donated my Samsung refrigerator to someone on Facebook who desperately needed a refrigerator.I warned them. Every time the power goes out the fucking refrigerator goes into fucking demo mode when the power is restored which means it looks like it’s cooling, but it’s not cooling which means anytime I’m out of town. I have to have somebody house sit or go by every day in case the fucking power went out or glitched even for a second.
When I contacted Samsung about this problem, they acknowledged it, but said for me it’s my fault for living with a shitty power company. I live in a hurricane prone area. The power goes out a lot.. I’m not kidding you the fucking Samsung engineer said that to me get a better source of power. Never buy a Samsung product never never buy a fucking Samsung product never.
@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias If someone with this sort of problem has the space and the money to do so, plugging the fridge into a suitably sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) should help. The UPS will complain if it runs out of power, and it will shield the fridge from brief power flickers. It doesn't have to run the fridge for long, it just needs to be able to supply enough amps during the outage to keep the fridge's computer running. 1/

@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias With a little more tech, you can have the UPS send you messages when its battery gets low, so your housesitter only needs to visit in those cases rather than *every 4 hours*.

@jalefkowit LG fridges also have this mode, but it's harder to activate accidentally (you have to have one door open, hold one button, and push another 3 times).

@jalefkowit This happened to us during a dinner party, after some guest hit the magic button sequence trying to get our (unconnected) ice maker to dispense ice. The display helpfully reported " O FF ", which my embedded developer brain mistranslated as "oh, it's displaying hex; must be some programming glitch."
No dummy, it's saying "OFF"

@billinkc @jalefkowit Great joke to play on a Fox News viewer, though.
@msbellows Biden turned off my fridge! 🤨

@jalefkowit Does Demo Mode disable internet connectivity too?

@monkee @billinkc @jalefkowit And twice a year, George Soros sneaks into my house and moves my clocks forward or backwards one hour!

@CheapPontoon @jalefkowit @machias wow, I could understand having a demo mode possible, the store can then sell "floor models" which are identical but may have slight scratches or dings etc for a cheaper price and everyone wins...
Having it by default on power on has to be a malicious!

Ford flipped the switch which he saw was now marked "Mode Execute Ready," instead of the now old-fashioned "Access Standby," which had so long ago replaced the appallingly stone-aged "Off". - Douglas Adams, 1984.
