I learned two things this weekend. One is that Samsung refrigerator/freezers have a “Demo Mode” where everything seems to be running normally, but all the actual cooling functions have been disabled. And the other is that you can activate this mode by leaning against the door the wrong way

Presumably #Samsung fridge freezers without external control panels are immune? Asking for a me.

@CppGuy Presumably yes, but never underestimate Samsung’s ability to design something poorly

Wow. I've heard of UI 'dark patterns' before, but this qualifies as a 'doh pattern'.

I dunno about you but I'm about six feet tall, _all_ torso, and constantly tired of holding my body up. I'm _gonna_ lean on shit.

          Appliances should be lean-able.

@machias It’s a Samsung appliance, it’s a miracle it’s not designed to automatically enter Demo Mode every time Mercury is in retrograde

@jalefkowit @machias I gave away my Samsung refrigerator. Literally gave it away for no money at all.
In the reply to this reply, I will explain why. It has to do with demo mode, but it’s impossible for me to say this without cussing a lot.

I donated my Samsung refrigerator to someone on Facebook who desperately needed a refrigerator.

I warned them. Every time the power goes out the fucking refrigerator goes into fucking demo mode when the power is restored which means it looks like it’s cooling, but it’s not cooling which means anytime I’m out of town. I have to have somebody house sit or go by every day in case the fucking power went out or glitched even for a second.

When I contacted Samsung about this problem, they acknowledged it, but said for me it’s my fault for living with a shitty power company. I live in a hurricane prone area. The power goes out a lot.. I’m not kidding you the fucking Samsung engineer said that to me get a better source of power. Never buy a Samsung product never never buy a fucking Samsung product never.

@jalefkowit misread that as "demon mode" at first and it doesn't seem that wrong…

@jalefkowit aside from anything else, why does a fridge even have a demo mode? what else could it be demonstrating other than "being cold"?

@jalefkowit Reminds me of 1980s era video arcade machines (I once met a guy who repaired them), where there was a looping display of game action, that was called "attract mode." Sound, colored lights, high score displays. Pseudo use.
Put money in to play, or just earworm it.

@jalefkowit I know I'm saying the quiet part out loud here, but, I mean...

What does a refrigerator have to demo besides keeping food cold?

I learned two things this weekend. One is that Samsung refrigerator/freezers have a “Demo Mode” where everything seems to be running normally, but all the actual cooling functions have been disabled. And the other is that you can activate this mode by leaning against the door the wrong way

                                          @jalefkowit

why is it that all the "smart" appliances mostly seem to be "appliances that really smart to own"...

i propose calling them "overly complicated appliances" instead.
