    I think it’s absurd to say we need to “get past the idea that AI is inherently bad”

    AI *is* inherently bad because it’s trained on stolen work, consolidates power to a handful of billionaires with, let’s say less than stellar morals, and is hijacking resources like clean water and electricity

      AI can be useful, sure. It can simplify complex tasks, understand natural language in ways we‘ve only dreamed of for decades.

      But it’s still inherently bad in the way that chopping down forests to build a motorway is inherently bad, even if it means you get Amazon deliveries faster

        @BenRiceM I can’t get past the “it makes us stupid, and reinforces our worst impulses” part as well.

          @BenRiceM I agree with you here, 100%, but it needs more push back and we need to keep publishing all the way it is bad to cut through the hype and marketing bs.

              @jamesthomson I think a lot of tools can make us lazy. Calculators, for example 😜

              But that doesn’t mean we should never use them. Just use them when appropriate and don’t forget how to live without them if they can be rescinded without warning

                  @BenRiceM
                  It's mostly the same people who want us to get past the idea that genocide is inherently bad.

                  It's not absurd in their world view, they just think that the things we regard as a functioning society gets in the way of them owning everything including us.

                      @BenRiceM @jamesthomson I put blame for all the worlds problems on calculators and dice simulators TBH

                      In all seriousness, I compare AI to uranium/plutonium. Used in very specific use cases it can be powerful and in most all others very, very dangerous.

                          I get really sad when I see writers using AI generated art. It’s like they’re missing the message.

                              @BenRiceM the disconnect at my job is so real. People are so proud of themselves that they let copilot summarize their email and get borderline aggressive if you dare to point out any downside of AI.

                              Many people feel that it doesn’t affect or marginalizes them directly so they don’t care

                                @jamesthomson @BenRiceM hmm. "… reinforces our worst impulses."

                                I think that can also be reframed as: "validates our worst impulses." In which case, I can see why LLMs catch on in some really creepy and anti-social circles. 😥
