    “The US is no longer a democracy. One of the most credible global sources on the health of democratic nations now says this outright. The Varieties of Democracy Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusio … that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey.” 1/

    @heidilifeldman

    if enough of us wrote/emailed/phoned/screamed outside their office to our congressional
    reps to IMPEACH or face voter outrage leading to being voted out, and kept it up,
    eventually we could regain our democracy

    If you know of actions bringing people together as a force
    to be reckoned with, while the world is up in arms against
    Trump for so many reasons,
    when the economy is getting ever worse ...
    then Spread the word

      @heidilifeldman No, the US has always been more accurately described as a constitutional republic (if anything, maybe you can call it an indirect democracy, but definitely not a pure form of one). I believe this article best sums things up: https://www.standrewslawreview.com/post/is-the-united-states-a-constitutional-republic

        ‘The…“liberal democracy index” shows that the speed with which US democracy is being dismantled is unprecedented in modern history. Congress has been marginalised, jeopardising the “checks and balances” … so crucial to US democracy. @heidilifeldman man in fairness Congress mainly marginalized itself by a gradual conversion from legislating to being an insider trading sinecure

            That's right

            Everything is #JoeBiden's fault

            Funny how I keep forgetting this

            @FinchHaven @KathyLK @heidilifeldman

            Democrats were so concerned with decorum that they let a traitor get away with treason / sedition and then he got elected President.

            They deserve to accept some responsibility for where we are right now.

                @pinoycelt @heidilifeldman “The US falls under governmental classifications for both Indirect Democracy and Constitutional Republic”

                This article sums nothing up, unless your point is that it is both a republic and a democracy. If that’s your point, I don’t see the relevance to the topic.

                The issue at hand is that the USA has historically been a representative democracy, and the current trajectory will see it losing that status soon.

                    The USA has always been a low quality democracy, or even no democracy at all. But it was hidden. Not anymore.

                                @KathyLK It's not impossible that he could have been held accountable in other ways during the biden admin, but your argument doesn't consider:

                                * He was held accountable in nearly any arena they thought they could get him in;

                                * Prosecution doesn't equate to a winning verdict (he was prosecuted for stealing US secret documents and the judge fell all over herself to not hold him accountable to the point where her superiors told her to cut it out);

                                * Congress?!? SCOTUS?!?!?

                                  For whatever it's worth, Garland was a *huge* disappointment to me. I think it's very possible that he played it too "safe," but he was also on some new ground. I'm not sure SCOTUS would've agreed with other findings and I think the thing I focus on the most is that I don't disagree that the "parking brake" failed but it's *more* concerning to me that the "service/foot brakes" seem to be out (state legislature, congress, judiciary).

                                    @ClickyMcTicker @heidilifeldman It was simply a correction to the suggestion that the US is a straight democracy, which it has never been

The Varieties of Democracy Institute at Gothenburg University reaches the alarming conclusio … that the US is hurtling towards autocracy at a faster rate than Hungary and Turkey.” 1/

                                      @heidilifeldman In truth, it never was a democracy. That's a fiction it likes to tell itself. The electoral college, and allowing private money into politics, both rule it out as being democratic.

                                        @heidilifeldman man in fairness Congress mainly marginalized itself by a gradual conversion from legislating to being an insider trading sinecure

                                        Really who in Congress is insider trading? What stocks and what insider information? I keep hearing this fact free claim.

                                          Yes Joe Biden should have taken over the justice department and turned us into a tinpot dictatorship first by prosecuting his political opposition. The American people are responsible for the rise of Trump, 77 million people voted for this and another 90 million stayed home. Special shout out to all the leftists who claimed both sides are the same.
