I recall reading something last week comparing UI design craftsmanship to expert woodworking, where if joints are cut perfectly you can fit pieces together, securely, without nails, screws or glue.

I recall reading something last week comparing UI design craftsmanship to expert woodworking, where if joints are cut perfectly you can fit pieces together, securely, without nails, screws or glue. The piece just fit. I can't find the post, but I *think* it was here on Mastodon. Can't find it though. (I don't recall whether the post mentions “kigumi”, the Japanese word for the technique.)
Anyone else see it? Kinda driving me nuts.

@gruber Since you mentioned Japanese technique and fitting pieces together without nails, screws or glue, it reminded me of the stone walls of Osaka Castle. I visited Japan recently and was amazed to know that the walls are built using large interlocking granite boulders, without mortar. They are also less susceptible to earthquakes.

@gruber @jsit @csilverman @timbrown yep, for example in the energy world (especially renewables in Europe) almost all the relevant discourse happens on LinkedIn
