I am going to need some volutnteer copy-editors / advance readers for this monstrosity. if you're a booster this is going to be a hard read because it's relentlessly negative. but if you're a critic it's going to be a hard read because there's a lot of harm-reduction safety-tips language assuming that the reader doesn't agree with me and that they will continue to use AI (or at the very least are not able to escape mandates to use AI). so does anyone feel like doing some self-abuse next week

I gotta be honest, I'm a bit annoyed at the amount of AI nonsense going on at both the conference and within the community right now. It was more emotionally difficult to book this year than it has been in years prior. I am expecting more tense social interactions that require a far higher degree of self-regulation this time than I am used to at an event where I usually feel like I am Among My People.

@glyph On the plus side (for very particular values of “plus,”) there will probably be far fewer people than the previous years, as most foreigners will likely forfeit it, so it might balance out the amount of arguing.

@glyph so I’m someone who’s extremely worried about the overall societal effects, but is also a manager at an aggressively AI-focused company.

I think I’m your demo, happy to review

@glyph i'm not exactly a hyper, but i use it enthusiastically, i just don't talk about it much here, because of the stigma. i'll have some time in the coming weeks, so i might be able to read at least some.

but i hope you try to be concise, i know it's hard, one of the hardest part of writing, but it helps the message getting across.

also i trust you make sure it's fact based, there is a lot of unchecked ideas on both sides.

@glyph feeling something similar. The AI hype-cycle is draining. The volume of slop submitted as proposed talks boggled my mind. Why does anyone stifle their authentic voice behind a pile of rubbish talking points? I’m not interested in in Claude’s pointless summary of some prompts. I. Want. To. Hear. A. Real. Person. Really. Speaking.

@glyph the existence of evil doesn't come with a responsibility to stare directly into the evil at all times. Sometimes the most good you can do is to look away for a while and live a life.

This is why I practice direct action to help with basic needs (e.g. efoodnet.org), it's a way to fight evil while surrounded by good. Honestly I just cant let myself negatively spiral, and this is a better practice than avoidance.

@jay I am struggling a bit with _everything_ right now, as I am digging out of a multi-dimensional hole. but, the difficulty here in particular is simply that I have given myself a project that is much more challenging on more axes than I originally appreciated, and I'm kinda locked in on it right now. I think it's important to fight through this but the process is somewhat … adversarial, as the evidence is changing quickly and there are a lot of bad actors in this space
