🗣 LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!!!

❝ Too many in our world refuse to acknowledge what both science and the Church plainly teach,” he said, “that we bear a solemn responsibility for the stewardship of our planet and for the welfare of those who dwell upon it, especially the most vulnerable, whose lives are imperilled by the reckless exploitation of both people and the natural world.” ❞

      no joke, that shit happened

'The Free Press reported on April 6 that Cardinal Christophe Pierre, who acted as a Holy See ambassador to the U.S. until March, met with Pentagon officials in January. The Free Press reported, citing unnamed Vatican officials, that the meeting was "a bitter lecture warning that the United States has the military power to do whatever it wants — and that the Church had better take its side."'

@blogdiva This week I learned of a saying the Muslim community of Bosnia have: "Even at the end of the world you should plant a tree".

Also, Galileo might have gotten away with his book, if he hadn't put the literal Pope's literal arguments in favor of geocentrism into the mouth of a character literally called "idiot". That whole kerfuffle was just as much about Galileo as a person as about his science.

(Also Giordano Bruno was not burned at the stake only because of his astronomy but also for denying the virgin birth and that Jesus was indeed the Messiah)

Geocentrism is dumb and Galileo was 1000% correct. Speaking truth to power is the best option 9/10ths of the time

after Galileo, one of the most important cases of scientific censorship ―and defense against excommunication― was of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in México. she was part of what would have been my dissertation on the baroque and neobaroque in América Latina, so yeah am ghastly aware of the nuances.

@blogdiva @nev @regendans Didn't knew Juana Inés de la Cruz! Really a pitty that her and Antonio Vieira never met. True intellectual giants.

@regendans @blogdiva Yes and with Giordano Bruno. But they quickly adapted. Like it or not we have to recognize that the Catholic Church - today - is miles away from Evangelic scientific obscurantism. You have Vatican theologians with Phd in Astronomy that don't put aside the idea of Big-Bang and a Universe harboring many intelligent life forms. A little different from tv preachers that say dinosaurs fossils were inserted in rocks by the devil to foul humanity.

@blogdiva That's a slight misrepresentation of science though; it does provide explanations of cause and effect, notably about environmental changes; it can't tell us what we must do.

Judging that certain effects should be avoided or prevented, is not a scientific as much as an ethical insight.

In a college religion class, a speaker of Amharic and Hebrew noted that his version of Genesis had humans “made stewards of the land.” The translation in the Kings James draft giving humans “dominion over the land” is a translation choice at the root of all of this. 35 years later, I still recall this conversation.
