#IMadeAThing! I've refined my #Dalek control room heartbeat sound effect, adding more harmonics, tweaking the reverb and speeding it up a bit. I'm really psyched to have been able to get as close as I have to such an iconic sound effect. Here's the original for reference. Let me know what you think.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su45cczykO8&list=RDsu45cczykO8&start_radio=1 #DoctorWho #SoundDesign #SoundEffects #SFX #SoundFX

@JustinMac84 @xogium OMG I'm not the only one that felt like that sounded like a heartbeat?

@JustinMac84 Hahaha! So am I. I absolutely like the sounds the tardis make, all of them. I wonder how they were made.

And then that episode in the rebooted tv show of 2005 where you actually get the feeling of « oh, shit" because you've just heard a weeping angel blowing out the candle Rory is holding… It might not be sound design but it sure showed an attention to details.

@xogium I'm not a fan of the new series. I'm classic all the way myself, but I'm glad that the show is endearing itself to a new generation. The TARDIS sound was made, primarily, by someone scraping a door key along piano strings.

@pixelate @xogium I can't take credit for cottoning onto that myself. I read articles etc to try and find out how it was made and some describe it as a heartbeat. Makes sense.

@JustinMac84 Hmmm. Now that you mention it, it does make sense. There's a little something left over from the original sound in there.

And yeah I hear you about the reboot vs classic. I just hava a huge problem with classic, the sound quality puts me off every single time.

@JustinMac84 @xogium My first exposure was, I think, The Impossible Plannet. Then I got all into the Cybermen. So, Cybermen 1 and 2 from Big Finish. Now I'm going back through the Classic and Revival series, and I've spent money mon Big finish. I respect that they don't DRM their MP3's.

@pixelate @xogium Big Finish do a lot of good titles. Quite a bit of crap as well, but that's to be expected. Dalek Empire is my favourite of dalek stuff that they do. Cybermen are great. It's weird, if you look at cybermen objectively, I thinkk they're cooler and more sinister than daleks, but there's just something about daleks, something about their presentation that makes them awesome.

@JustinMac84 @pixelate More cool indeed. They make a ton of noise when walking, but at least you can hear them coming. Daleks are furtive type. And they can't even go up a flight of stairs because they use wheels ha ha ha.

@xogium @pixelate That's just the new cybermen that make noise. I prefer the ones that don't. Yeah how the daleks got away without even being able to go upstairs for so long is a testament to their overwhelming cool, but also kind of ridiculous. Was fixed in 1988 though.

@JustinMac84 @pixelate Hah that is fair!
Speaking of new cybermen vs daleks... I absolutely like this scene from the new show. It's ridiculous in a good way because it's literally two different systems trying to agree on a protocol and just failing.

@JustinMac84 @xogium @pixelate I don't know if I'm alone in this but the "Tenth Planet" Cybermen are my favorites. Their voices had that combination of somewhat human-sounding with that odd, old time computer voice inflection that, to me, made them sound so frightening. The 1980s Cybermen did not sound emotionless to me. They sounded either angry, disgusted or like they were enjoying themselves. The new Cybermen sound like they're talking through a roll of toilet paper. The Nicholas Briggs Dalek voices, to me, are the best. They are menacing and absolutely frightening. Briggs has Dalek psychology down to a science.

@Black_Flag I think one of the reasons I'm a sound designer is because I like Doctor Who. The classic era sound effects were brilliant! When you consider the humble origins of that sound and the tardis sound, you can't deny the genious behind them! 🤩

@DavidGoldfield @xogium @JustinMac84 Ugh yes, and Spare Parts! You gotta listen to Spare Parts! It's on Apple Music, Spotify, all that. Just don't listen to it at night or you'll be awake the rest of the night.

@pixelate @xogium @JustinMac84 I loved Spare Parts. I only heard that once but that's one story I'd be happy to replay. They did a great job in showing the humanity of the Mondasians, which made their conversion even more tragic.
