Juan Carlos Pino, un meccanico cubano ha modificato la sua Fiat 126 del 1980 per farla funzionare a carbone, un combustibile più economico e abbondante della benzina da quando fli Stati Uniti hanno interrotto le forniture di petrolio all'isola caraibica a gennaio. Pino ha costruito l'ingegnoso veicolo nella sua officina ad Aguacate, una cittadina di 5.000 abitanti, a circa 70 km a est dell'Avana, un tempo fiorente grazie a una raffineria di zucchero ora chiusa. Oggi è circondata da pascoli e cave di pietra dove gli uomini si recano al lavoro con lunghe seghe a mano sulle spalle. La Fiat 126 ha sul retro un “serbatoio”  costruito interamente con materiali di recupero e riciclati. Il carbone brucia all'interno di una bombola di propano modificata e sigillata con il coperchio di un trasformatore. Il filtro è fatto con una bottiglia di latte in acciaio inossidabile riempita di vecchi vestiti. A Cuba la benzina è razionata rigorosamente. Sul mercato nero, la benzina viene venduta a 8 dollari al litro, ovvero 30 dollari al gallone, sei volte il prezzo ufficiale.

Juan Carlos Pino, a Cuban mechanic, has modified his 1980 Fiat 126 to run on coal, a more economical and abundant fuel than gasoline since the United States halted oil supplies to the Caribbean island in January. Pino built the ingenious vehicle in his workshop in Aguacate, a town of 5,000 inhabitants, about 70 km east of Havana, once prosperous thanks to a now-closed sugar refinery. Today it is surrounded by pastures and stone quarries where men go to work with long hand saws on their shoulders. The Fiat 126 has a “tank” built entirely from recycled and salvaged materials at the rear. Coal burns inside a modified and sealed propane tank with the lid of a transformer. The filter is made from a stainless steel milk bottle filled with old clothes. Gasoline is strictly rationed in Cuba. On the black market, gasoline is sold for $8 a liter, or $30 a gallon, six times the official price.
