I was involuntarily listening to two old ladies talking loudly to each other the other day. One, to the astonishment of the other, said she had never had a chip butty.
Being a true man of the world, I have had many chip butties in my time.
FYI, if needed, a chip butty is chips (ie french fries, NOT crisps) sandwiched between bread slices or in a bap/bun. Arguably it should be buttered, but we will ignore that for the purposes of the following poll:
Q. HAVE YOU EVER EATEN A CHIP BUTTY?
@Nickiquote Chippy where I grew up sold a 'bucket of chips - a half loaf with the crumb scooped out, and full of chips. Lush. And optional gravy! (South Wales Valleys). Now, further west, many (most?) chippies have chip butties on the menu. Totally normal!

@Nickiquote The key to a good chip barm is mushy peas.
-
@Nickiquote @bigvimto I am carb curious.
@ambientspace @Nickiquote @bigvimto May I interest you in a slappy? (A pasty / pie sandwich)

@TMangnall @ambientspace @Nickiquote
Oh yes, a pie barm is a thing of beauty
-
@bigvimto @Nickiquote Iโm thinking smashed garlic potatoes on toasted sourdough with a bit of crumbled Feta could be an amazing snack.
@ambientspace @Nickiquote That does sound tasty, but is much more high-brow than a chip barm. Cheap white bread (sliced or roll/barm), chips, salt and vinegar, sauce if you're nasty. For a bit of extra crunch you can get scraps on there too - the little bits of batter that have fallen to the bottom of the heated display unit in the chippy.

@Nickiquote Chip butties disgust me, I'd rather have a macaroni cheese pie if I seek the early coronary.

@Nickiquote I've had something like this before. What we do is put some lunch meat, cheese, some mayonaise maybe and some mustard, then some chips on a sandwich. Not sure if this counts as a chip buddy, but it's instantly what I thought of when you described it.

@Nickiquote answered no/UK as I've lived in the UK for 20 years... but now wonder if that should have been no/RoW as maybe this is a thing people do as children rather than adults. Do you eat such a thing as an adult?
I've heard of the concept of course, not sure if I have ever seen anyone do it.

@Nickiquote Kind of. I had street food on Paris that was half chips and half omelette in a nice baguette.

@Nickiquote I've never had a chip butty, though they are popular with one of the larger local immigrant communities.

@Nickiquote I did give a 70 year old English man his first chip butty recently. I was shocked.

I've never heard of a chip buddy but I'm going to count something I've made at a barbeque trying to have normal looking food as a vegan. I think the bun is pretty close to white bread..

Non-UK folks may see references to names for bread that may need explaining. There are many local / regional names for a bead roll and many styles too, these can include, but are not limited to: rolls, buns, baps, barms, barm cakes, cobs, batch and stotties. Any can be used for a chip butty. Anything from two slices of mass produced white sliced loaf, fancy artisan sourdough, soft flour dusted bap or crusty bread roll. Chips, between two bits of buttered bread equals a chip butty. -
