Obviously this clock can only be improved by the addition of a language setting. And maybe timezones.

Oh God. I wonder if it would be possible to make a purely mechanical gear train to produce these movements, at least for hours and minutes? -

@cstross I was about to intermesh my fingers and do my best evil villain laugh after thinking that one of the cursed language settings should be “Roman numerals”… except that rather annoyingly, those are nearly already alphabetized, boo. Only IX is out of place.

@themself @ascii158 @cstross Upon further thought:
Each timezone setting can be expressed in several ways. e.g. I live on the east coast of the USA, and my local timezone is EST, or EDT, or New York... (I haven't checked for the complete list.)
So: Multiple faces. Each face picks a random name for its timezone, and the faces are sorted by that.
Then, every minute, everybody picks a new name for their timezone, and the faces re-sort.

@cstross Honestly, I would buy a watch that implemented that. I wonder if there's any way I could implement it myself with something small enough to not be ridiculous.
