I did three decades in corporate and big tech and then business process and outsourcing (BPO) work. In the end you see what's going on and where it all leads, and learn to hate it. AI is just the next step and ... nope.

@Natasha_Jay I was at work drinks about 6 months ago and the big big big boss was saying, "This AI thing is going to be huge, we're gonna jump right in!". My team are a bunch of rusted on old nerds so of course we just nodded our heads and then ignored him once we got back to work and kept on developing as usual. About a month ago a company wide email was sent around saying, "Do not use AI tools or websites! You are forbidden until further notice." so I guess something happened.

@Natasha_Jay same but my answer was to go work in small businesses. Nowhere near enough cover for the arseholes to hide behind, so less (but not zero) arseholes. Works for me.

And the LLM thing is weird. I have thoughts on it, but I suspect I’ m out of sync with most of Mastodon. Where I do align is that large corps aren’t even vaguely holding it right.

@Natasha_Jay That old meme comes to mind about tech enthusiasts gushing about their smart homes and how they *love* tech, and the most advanced thing that tech *workers* have is a printer...with a gun or crowbar next to it for when it makes noises they don't recognise.

@Natasha_Jay Yep, not even just engineers but also people in video editing...all seem to want to run to the woods. The Tech worker -> Luddite pipeline.

@Natasha_Jay Damn right. I was only ever a technical writer but I learned enough to be cautious. Now retired I've had several people tell me they can show me how to use Facebook and WhatsApp etc. They are mystified when I tell them I tested FB for a magazine when it was first available on the UK then after a couple of years wrote another piece about leaving it. Back when most people thought 2nd Life and My Space were the future.
