    @bri7@social.treehouse.systems @afreytes@mastodon.gamedev.place Everytime I pickup tthe controller for my pc, I want to firebomb both Nintendo and Microslop, because they inverted labels on the buttons. So the fool that I am, with a controller compatible with both pc and switch, on pc has to press Y when the on screen control says X.

      @octopuddle @afreytes dude for real that would be useful. I get to game infrequently.

      And it's really hard to remember controls for games like Red Dead.

      Bethesda games are pretty much engraved in my brain though.

      @txtechnician @afreytes It often puts me off going back to something, since even just redoing the tutorial level is an overly long and laborious process that takes too long.

        @bovaz @afreytes @bri7

        Funny enough, Microsoft uses the same button placement as Sega's consoles did, in part cause the original XBox took a lot of design cues from the Dreamcast

          I hadnt used my Series X since I unsubscribed from GamePass... I hooked it up to a big TV today and I had forgotten how gorgeous games look.

          Anyway I launched Dark Souls... A game I have never finished.

          I do not remember anything. Feels like I forgot how to even walk.

          (cue to a post I made rencently about games needing a re-introduction to basic controls mini tutorials)

          @afreytes How far did you get in DS? Or is this you restarting it again?

          That game has some spots i dread returning to even as someone who's finished it 2 or 3 times

              @VileLasagna @NaClKnight This is still my first DS play through. From whenever Dark Souls Remastered was discounted and on XBox.

              I think I am one boss away from opening the door that the snake warps you to.

              But I think that boss, which has clones, I have to have the curse so I can damage it (like the ghosts).

              Honestly, I think DS is fun to play. What I dislike, since I dont know it by heart, is when you need some item, and the game maybe tells you once.

                @afreytes @NaClKnight Hmmm.... would you like some guidance in that direction or would you like to figure things out by yourself from here?

                Also, yeah, these games have a weird relationship to information. They like being obtuse and cryptic with a lot of stuff. I enjoy playing mostly blind at first but these games really assume a community to figure them out and share info in many ways so they CAN be frustrating with many things

                    @afreytes In that case, don't give up, skeleton!

                    always important to ask, imo. There's a whole spectrum between "I don't want to know ANYTHING" and "please tell me exactly where to go for an easy time because I'm done with this faffing about". Your mileage WILL vary with where you land there at any particular time if you keep playing FromSoft stuff XD

                      @VileLasagna @NaClKnight I feel like...

                      1) if a mcguffin is needed to proceed, then that information should be repeated always at the same place

                      2) obscure information or non-repeated dialogue should only lead you to bonus items or things that are helpful but not necessary/required to progress

                      I actually like FromSoft approach to story/lore... It's just sometimes it depends on the player doing trial and error trying to find out which item is required in which section
