finally tried live HDMI output on the loved one's EOS 4000D!
good:
* the HDMI->USB Just Works and the camera output shows up right there in OBS with no issues.bad:
* everything else.
* it's sending only the display, not the sensor output.
* this is because that's the only use they could think of for the HDMI output, playing back recordings on your telly.
* there is no Magic Lantern for EOS 4000D
* there is a Canon app that wants $10/mo to use your own fucking camera
* even with that the output apparently doesn't go over 720p
* i have ordered the correct USB cable (it's a USB *mini*-B to USB-A and it cost £4)* and there are directions on how to fuck around with gphoto2 but i expect no joyit's a great little camera for taking photos and *recording* video and that's it
verdict: get something released this decade lol
* why the fuck were Canon releasing new mini-B in 2018? because as far as i can tell the 4000D is made from cheap parts they found in the skip out the back. cheap, cheerful and is what it is
@davidgerard I have a 5D mk. 2 (2010 vintage) and it works well with gphoto2. You might find it just works.
Thing to be aware of, though: when the camera goes to sleep -- a minute or so after you last poked it -- it drops off the USB bus. Bloody annoying.

@dickon for photos sure, but this is about live video from the sensor. nobody could quite get the 4000d to do video from the sensor and not the screen, but who knows. i'll give it a go.

@davidgerard Oh, sorry -- does gphoto2 (claim to) do that? I've never tried; thought you were talking about stills in that bit.

@davidgerard Note that some of Canon’s web pages about the app say “HD 720 Support (Digital Upscale)” and “Full HD 1080 Support (Digital Upscale)”. I *think* that means the app natively outputs LCD screen resolution, but I haven’t used it since 2020 when it was free and webcams were unobtainable.

@davidgerard I have an even older Sony camera, and routinely use the HDMI out (plugged into an HDMI-->USB capture dongle, elgato makes good ones, but $20 amazon ones also work). It's a full res feed, up to 4K. Certainly no need for an app! I checked your 4000D manual and apparently all it's doing is feeding the "live display" on the back of the camera. And that display is not high res (spec is 230k "dots", and if that's the same as pixels, it's pitiful).

@TorontoWill yeah this is a $20 Amazon dongle and it Just Worked so well
but yeah basically this camera is not going to feed your sensor video to the HDMI live

currently eyeing up the lumix dc-g100 which is a u4/3 the size of a large compact and very nice
(it *should* be a travel camera but doesn't have OIS, but that's fine for a video camera)
@davidgerard fwiw the Lumix Gs mostly don’t have phase detect AF, which makes their video autofocus a bit hit and miss
Sony A5100, similar price on used market, has decent video AF and makes a decent HDMI webcam (and it has a bigger sensor, though it also lacks IBIS). I mention it bc I’ve used one as such for the last ~6 years
