Bambu Lab is abusing the open source social contract

Last year I said I'd probably never recommend another Bambu Lab printer again. I still use my P1S, but after Bambu Lab started pushing their always-connected cloud solution as the new default: I blocked the printer from the Internet via my OPNsense Firewall I stopped updating the firmware I locked the printer into Developer mode I deleted Bambu Studio and started using OrcaSlicer I had to do that to keep it under my control, instead of Bambu's.

Sooner or later, I'll buy a 3D printer. But, after this, I think I'll look at other brands.

@stefano me, coming from the, “you bought this, it’s yours to own, pull-apart and fix era”; I watched this happen in the jump from dot matrix to inkjet printers; Then the homegrown 3D printers to bamboo printer era.

The print products all follow that late stage capitalist hook. The consumables or connectivity.

One thing I noticed looking at <https://www.orcaslicer.com/> (looks like a great bit of S/W) is the

“… come talk to us on #discord.”

Create your own domain, web & email service cheapskates because using Discord follows the same enshitification pattern 😲🤪☺️

But be prepared—they’re going to try to talk you into buying that flammable junk! 🙂 Twice a month, the feed will be flooded with bamboo reviews; guys will be giving tips on how to print resin-like figures on an FTM—exclusively using bamboo; bamboo will inevitably be in the background even when the video is supposedly about something else entirely, and so on. 🙂

@stefano I have waited until late 2025 to purchase a 3D printer, as I wanted to have something usable without to much tweaking - I have enough time consuming hobbies. When I looked at the available brands, this cloud centric design, telemetry and attitude scared me away from Bambu Labs. I settled for a Creality printer, it is in my "printer" vlan with no connectivity and just works well with either their own (modified Orca) slicer and original OrcaSlicer. Seems robust and well made so far.

@stefano @geerlingguy I am going to the library makerspace to get certified* to use their ultimaker S5 today. Ill see if using it works to replace my old printer that is failing when I try larger prints. Otherwise, I was looking at the Bamboo labs X2D with 2 nozzles (i like the idea of multi color/material prints with less waste). Ill look at other options in the consumer price range if i need to buy one, or look into putting it on the IOT vlan that has no outbound access.

*certified = watch a video and get basic training on how to not break the printer when using it.

@stefano @geerlingguy building fame on "we're open source and support tinkering with our products" only to later do a total 180 and convert everything into cloud-first app-only enshittified walled garden. shame on them.
