I do not think Americans realise the far reaching economic consequences of having elected Donald Trump.
While the Danes have elected a new parliament which may push for less military purchases from the U.S., the citizens of Denmark have now presented two new citizen petitions: One requiring parliament to make it illegal to use Peter Thiel's Palantir AI surveilance software, and another one preventing the use of American technologies in our national health systems.
Welcome to the Trump economy.
Believe me, some of us do. And did before he was elected.
The problem was explaining why to people who don't have enough grounding in history, politics, and economics to understand the arguments. You lose them as soon as you say, "Well, let's start in ancient Athens when they invented democracy and then accidentally invented populism and tyrants…"

@randahl
Good, and I hope others follow their example. People need to realize that actions have real long-term consequences. So many people think that if we (I'm an American) elect a Democrat in the next election (assuming there is one), things will "go back to normal." What's been happening is not normal and it would be very unwise for other countries to rely on the stability of the US when we've demonstrated such a willingness to blow everything up.@jbowen @randahl@mastodon.social
the problem is that it is normal but white liberals didn't care until it affected them personally. they would like to "go back" to things not affecting them personally. that is the definition of reactionary.

@solitha @connynasch @randahl
Agreed on all points. It's what I hear mostly from moderates who are tuned out of the news. They think they can just keep their head in the sand for his second term like they did for his first and that things will look familiar when then pop back up again.I've gone hoarse from trying to convince people that *if* there's a will to make real changes for the better, it will take at least two generations to recover from what is being done now.
@jbowen @solitha@mastodon.social @connynasch@mastodon.social @randahl@mastodon.social
someone very important once wrote a letter from a jail in Alabama, about the threat of the white "moderate". perhaps you've heard of him?
Letter from Birmingham Jail, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s letter to 8 white church leaders, written from a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963.

@Nigel_Lake @randahl I work excluding with Microsoft software. Our customers are heavily invested with Microsoft. It will be much work and take long time.
I would say that the mood is worried. The trust is gone.
The first step is requiring documents to be stored in ODF (Open Document Format).
Then it will easier later to change the software.

@randahl I think we're going to involuntarily North Korea ourselves with this strategy.

@randahl Unfortunately, too many Americans have been drugged with the toxic brew of #AmericanExceptionalism and don't really grasp that our actions have consequences.

@randahl sadly can't sign as I'm not a danish citizen yet. You need to be able to vote to sign. But keep spreading the word!

@randahl idk some of us trans ones have had to move more than 1x a year for the last 15 years to find a safe place to live and now the "safe" places are also terrifying (but they were never safe to begin with, either) but lots of people like to be like "haha dumb Americans" as if a bunch of us aren't trapped in situations that we're dyin' or suffering in. No health insurance, no medicine, no money, no homes, no food... tired and living w/ vermin but no we don't realize how bad it can get.

@randahl no family, no support, strangers who use our situations to further their own social gain and who do nothing to help the people they "fight for" - Dunno. It all feels a little "clout chasey" when you're just online making sweeping generalizations about millions of people but who am I to make such a claim? Not like any other countries leaders had anything to do with this or Epstein or anything.

@paulschoe @Nigel_Lake @randahl Harder to change from using an agent to help me with code in Visual Studio Code having plugins to Azure and Claude Coude.
Replacing all the services in Azure will take so much time.

Trump won by a slim margin. Fuck the electoral college. The rest of us know he is an abysmal failure at business. -

actually... "I do not think Americans realise the far reaching ....consequences of (fill in the blank) "is actually way more accurate for about 90% of the population.

@randahl I don't know how many do or don't, though it's obviously nowhere near enough.
But the damage is real, and that's what matters most right now. The political effects must follow, sooner or later, and I fear later is more likely. Nevertheless, they will come.
Most Americans are probably unaware of how dependent we are on the rest of the world sending money to us. So stop. Stop buying our stuff. Stop helping our companies make money. DIVEST.
Those losses cannot be hidden.
