Who remembers when identifying terrorists was simple ? They were people with bombs or guns or other deadly weapons that set out to 'terrorise' the general public.
Well, I suppose we must all learn the UK's newspeak - unarmed protesters, whose only intention towards the public is to educate, and their elderly supporters holding up cardboard signs - these are the terrorists now.

Terrorists are now defined as anybody that threatens the government authority or the aims of their dodgy sponsors. The definition has nothing to do with keeping the public safe anymore.

@GeofCox Your first group also included people who the authorities *considered* likely to use guns, bombs, etc.
Until 2001-09-11, by a considerable margin the largest UK group detained & charged under anti-terrorist legislation were animal rights protestors. (Myself included). Who generally have profound, well thought out reasons for wanting to *avoid* causing terror or harm to animals, including humans.(And yes, some nutters too, I grant. *Every* group has nutters. It's part of being human.)

@GeofCox the essence of terrorism is that it must terrify, not mildly annoy and inconvenience, and that terror must be linked to a change in what a State does.
So yes, although both parties are behaving stupidly in one matter, it is an affront to English to describe it so.
