@cstross I don't know who started this rumor but from what I saw it seems Apple is not going for a 2009 look but they are focusing on improving existing features rather than going for new things much like they did with Snow Leopard. That means nothing is going to change drastically.

@abhijithb21 Yes, that's exactly what they're doing. (Snow Leopard looked identical to Leopard on top, but worked better under the hood. It was consolidation and refinement—and it was needed.)

When I watch old James Bond movies, I like them. But I am aware that it is because I assume that they were made as a farce, commenting on the time‘s mysogeny and western dominance, which they are not.

Not sure, if this toot is about UI design though.

@iamlayer8 @heavyimage Wrt Bond: the originals were *not* made as farce, the farce only arrived with Roger Moore (and the mad 1960s "Casino Royale" that got made independently because of a previous 1950s TV deal that unbundled that book's IP from the rest of the property). Sean Connery era Bond was in earnest.

@bjn @pndc It's a classic case of "less is more". I'm reminded of how, when Jobs returned as interim CEO, his first obvious action was to prune most of their products with that famous two-axis diagram (consumer/business, and desktop/laptop: "we need four computers to cover these use cases, axe the rest").

Someone needs to do that again, kinda-sorta (maybe spin out the non-core stuff as separate companies, to stand or fall on their own). But it won't happen. Wall Street would shit themselves.

@cstross @pndc The reason watches/cloud/whatever have value is because they are part of Apple’s ecosystem/walled garden. Hiving them off would put them outside of that and they would be worth far less.

@cstross @iamlayer8 Not sure I totally agree actually! The early Connery's are more serious but by the time you get to You Only Live Twice and Diamonds are Forever they have become self aware and very very silly in parts.

IMHO the amount of silly Q stuff in the film is directly proportional to the camp factor, basically. The amount of Q in the franchise is a sine wave.

@cstross A few years ago, I re-watched the James Bond movies and noticed they oscillate back and forth between "this is too campy; go serious" and "this is too serious, go camp!".

This is a toot about UI design trends.

So ... "Bond" learned how to structure franchises by copying the Carry On people?

Which makes the Camp Ham elements all the more hilarious.

I think you can make a movie funny or silly without it being a farce. A farce would have to not be funny or silly to work.
It may be more of a persiflage when it‘s also funny. So that may describe my reaction better. And I still know it was not meant as a persiflage. I‘m just coping.

@cstross I am putting off upgrading my original iPhone SE to something newer because I can not stand this god damn new UI they've come up with.

                      It's hideous.

That's why I got rid of my Apple kit in about 2010. Not sure where that falls on the "Snow Leopard axis" (an excellent-sounding Spectre-a-like for future Jimmy Bond stories : the Belarus-Russia-N.Korea-Greenland bloc?)

@abhijithb21 @cstross It is likely that things will change visibly. The guy who was head of design when Liquid Glass rolled out, Alan Dye, absconded to Facebook shortly after, and Apple promoted Steve Lemay internally. They also just re-hired Sebastiaan de With, who had been there before and then went to Halide. Before Apple rolled out Liquid Glass, he posted this entirely speculative story about what it might look like. In the abstract, he was on the mark, but note how much less of a disaster his renderings are. He’d be a good candidate for fixing things. https://www.lux.camera/physicality-the-new-age-of-ui/

@adamrice @cstross Interesting. My work device is a Mac and most people at office were upset about Liquiq Glass. Especially, people of my age said it looks like Windows Vista. I hope this update cheers them up. I just turned transparency and animations off.
