"In Harper’s, Ken Silverstein had revealed that the center had accumulated an endowment topping [$120M] while paying lavish salaries to its highest-ranking staffers and spending far less than most nonprofit groups on the work that it claimed to do. The great Southern journalist John Egerton, writing for The Progressive, had painted a damning portrait of [...] civil-rights work mainly as a marketing tool for bilking gullible Northern liberals."

a hatchet job by the NYT is more endorsement than condemnation in my mind...

they've been a fascist publicity firm in their op-eds and choice/wording of headlines longer than i've been alive.

There are lots of reasons to criticise the *NY Times*, I agree. But this exposé is from the *New Yorker*, and I've seen similar articles from other serious magazines.

      Here's a good one from a left-leaning website: https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/2019/03/the-southern-poverty-law-center-is-everything-thats-wrong-with-liberalism

they may not be perfect but they do some very effective work.

i'm more concerned with the precedent. using the DoJ to be the department of right wing revenge, along with the possibility of the IRS yanking non-profit status from anyone called a "terrorist" if they critize the government are truly existential threats to free speech and free society.

let's kill that first, then worry about cleaning up non-profits.

As long as you donate less than $5k a year, anon donations are fine. Donations $5k and over are supposed to be reported by name (or org) on Schedule B of the 990.

So give $4999.99 or less. But that's per person, not household. FYI. Some orgs combine spouses accts by default but you can direct them specifically not to, esp if you file personal taxes separately.

@tomjennings @raven667 There’s a world of difference between “complying in advance” and “I’m part of a group with targets on their backs and keeping a low profile is what allows me to not have daily panic attacks.”

The post office (and therefore Doge and Palentir) knows every org that has sent you a ty letter in the last 10 years-ish. They scan everyone's mail. You can go to the usps website and sign up for them to send you an email every day with your scanned mail items expected to be delivered to you.

They send them daily except Sundays. So, they already know the types of orgs you hzve given to. To pollute the data you have to give (tiny) donations to some RW orgs.

Like I said, we shouldn't have much confidence in the Trump Justice Department, no. But we should also hold tight to our wallets when it comes to the SPLC.

This is where the people that donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center went to donate, so that their money could be used to infiltrate and uncover white nationalist organizations.

So don't donate here unless you want some of your money to be used to uncover white nationalist organizations.

@mekkaokereke It is very common for legal organizations to do what the SPLC does. I remember during my parents shit-show of a divorce, my mother's lawyer could dispatch a short of private investigator. Legal Discovery has very very very very few rules to it.
