I've had an overwhelmingly positive response to my recent name change, primarily to align with my agender gender identity. I am so grateful for this!
️ However, there was one glaring exception. My best friend that I've known for 20 years took it extremely poorly. Her points:
* I am out of control and making very bad decisions.
* As a parent, she believes parents have an indelible right for their children to keep the name they were assigned by them.
* It is against her religion to change names.It also came up she was not understanding the whole difference between sex assigned at birth and gender identity, and that body parts do not define your gender.
I'm pretty sure I just lost my best friend from this, and am still processing it. But I won't stop this change, because it is right for me.

@AncTreat5358 that's hard.
Sorry your friend couldn't actually support you. -

@AncTreat5358 oh wow! That's a lot to deal with, and I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. I feel bad for her kids who will have to work through all that as they get older. I never felt like my kid's name belonged to me. I gave him a name because he couldn't when he was born but he went through multiple names before landing on the one that fit for him. I'm happy he felt good about experimenting and figuring it out with my spouse and I.

@AncTreat5358 You have to do what is right for you.
As a parent, I only want the best for my offspring. My 25YO is non-binary, and they changed their assigned name partly because it became associated with a terrorist organisation, but mainly because of their newly discovered identity. They have their own mind, and own view of the world: they're still my child, they're still loved, but I don't own them. I can't understand why any parent wouldn't feel the same.

@AncTreat5358
That's sad. I feel bad for you but even more so for her kids.@dillyd Well said.

@AncTreat5358 it's against HER religion for YOU to change names?!
-
As sad as this is:
Those that matter don't mind
Those that mind don't matterThe loss us hers, and the gain yours, as her behaviour is indicative of negative attitudes that you may previously been unaware if.
@alexadeswift Very eloquently stated, Alexa!
We had avoided this landmine so long that I thought I knew where I would stand with her.
The cool thing on the name change was with my aunt. She said it would be difficult to change, but she will make an effort because it's important to me. I appreciate her so much for that! And something like this is what I had anticipated from my BF.
-
One, I am so sorry that you had to experience that reaction

Two, "out of control" for something like a name change is... I don't even have the words.
Three, it's her religion? Cool. Good thing it's not your religion, or it would be in any way relevant...
And Alex sounds like a pretty good agender name!
@oddtail I appreciate your kind and thoughtfully shared words!
And thanks; I'm glad to hear I chose a nice agender name.

@electropict Thank you for sharing this insight. Yes, she does identify as Christian.
