@jorge@hachyderm.io @2something@transfem.social @LAS@floss.social As a GNU Guix System user Flatpak has allowed me to access a wider collection of software that is not packaged in the distro that would've been difficult to get running otherwise as Guix is very different and pre-built binaries not specifically made for Guix typically don't work here, while Flatpak provides the same environment as anywhere else. If Flatpak will soon hard-depend on systemd in order to work, however, Flatpak would not work on GNU Guix any more as Guix uses GNU Shepherd rather than systemd (this will never change). Which means that for me as well as any other Flatpak user in a similar situation the Linux Desktop experience will get worse, not better, as a result of this change...
@kimapr @LAS @2something Why are you complaining to me? Your computer is your business.
-
@yuuka Of course it'll use systemd what else would it use?
-
@jorge@hachyderm.io @LAS@floss.social @2something@transfem.social
I would really rather it not, especially since systemd seems to endorse merging AI slop.
@flammableengineering @LAS @2something This is modern linux, there's only systemd.

@jorge@hachyderm.io @LAS@floss.social @2something@transfem.social Because you seem to be involved in Flatpak development, and want to change Flatpak in a way that will negatively impact me. But I am pretty sure your reply is made in bad faith and thus will not engage any more. Peace.

@jorge@hachyderm.io @2something@transfem.social @LAS@floss.social I suggest you to look and compare the amount of engagement on my reply to yours that i originally replied to (for this you should use "view on remote instance" button next to my post as hachyderm does not show an accurate count for it). I believe they call this phenomenon "ratio" on the social media website twitter dot com.

@kimapr @LAS @2something People are going to build what they want if you want something else go contribute it.

The flatpak.org setup page includes "setup" instructions for at least 7 distros which do not have SystemD, including Alpine, Void, Guix, Slack, Pisi, Salix, and Gentoo. All of those distros are actively maintained, work on modern hardware, and are endorsed by flatpak now. -

More people will work on the more standard configs. And flatpak 1.0 is parallel installable - you don't lose anything.
Then we'll see where people send contributions. not up to me.
-
@yuuka What are you talking about. We're targetting the 95% everyone is using systemd.
-
@flammableengineering @LAS @2something This is modern linux, there's only systemd.
@jorge @flammableengineering @LAS @2something This is certainly an interesting thing to say as people actively move away from systemd-based distros due to the negative direction it has taken. You're welcome to develop software as you please, but don't be surprised when you experience hostility and the number of users drops - including me, who will no longer be able to use it after having had it be part of my setup for years. -

@usernameswift @flammableengineering @LAS @2something It's ok that's not a huge number, and the rest of us are using systemd's features to their fullest.
It's a free world do what you want.

@jorge @flammableengineering @LAS @2something
as the current openrc maintainer and developer, i guess i don't exist? nor does alpine, gentoo, guix, slackware, void, debian (yes debian supports non-systemd installs), and others? -
