I'm like thirty (fourty?) years late on this, but apparently some people were upset by Tasha Yar sleeping with Data. I thought the angle was a feminist one, in that they sluttify the strong female character the first chance they get. But no--it's that she "should have been a lesbian," and that this act "heterosexualizes" her, and Data by extension. I have to say, this is very silly.
For one thing, they're both space-drunk, so any actions they take are already handwaved as out of character. For another, Data isn't her first port of call, she flirts with Troy earlier in the episode.
Third, let's take a second and ask why she chose Data in the first place? Because he's not a man. Obviously. She's feeling a certain kind of way and uses him like a sex toy, basically. Data barely gets a say in it. To draw inferences as to his sexual preference from that alone is pretty dumb.
Finally, and this is the part that really gets me, the event happens in the THIRD EPISODE! At the time of writing, precisely zero episodes of the series had been produced. For the writers to have "changed" something implies there was a thing to change.
Data's clearly asexual, because he's a fucking robot, whereas Yar distrusts men due to her past, so leans gay, but has the occasional craving for penis when enebriated. Many such cases.
The writers didn't "straighten" anybody. They were born this way.
Be advised that the episode was a leftover original Star Trek script from the aborted fourth season.

@prism have seen the TNG porno that picks up Tash Yar’s story? Someone edited out all the sex and uploaded it to YouTube. The consensus is that it’s actually not a bad fan film, albeit with a very small budget. You can tell that these people actually cared about the source material.

As someone grew up sour under by assertive straight women with short hair, I always found this kind of funny. Not wrong, but not nearly as ironclad as would be believed.

I mostly base this on how she never shows any sort of attraction to any of the (extremely hunky) male characters on the show, and her past "rape gang" related trauma. In the episode where she is fighting the one dude's wife to the death, her only feelings are concern for the other woman. It's not a lot to go on but there's not a lot to go on with her in general. Were they to have written a female romantic interest for her, it would have felt right to me.
Either way I don't feel like they used that episode to "retcon" her into heteronormativity, which was the implication some have drawn.

@ppatel @jpellis2008 They did and there is a lossless bluray as well, I assume that's the mix that P+ is using. I just mean that it wasn't really in the cards when they were making the show so they don't really like use the surrounds in a dramatic way, they just fill up the space. Which is fine, but like if you are just listening to it on headphones or whatever you're probably not missing much.

@prism @ppatel @jpellis2008 If you take the centre channels out of the mix you get some truly beautiful stretches of ambient noise. The music is neat if that floats your boat too, but for me a good 3 or 4 minute stretch of various rooms and computer noises is golden.

@cachondo @prism @jpellis2008 I haven't rewatched the series in a couple of years. I seem to recall that the music in the first two or three seasons was better than the last few. Perhaps because we got used to it?

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time saying I wanted described Trek. Not every single episode is here. Like season 1 of ds 9 is missing. And there are random eps missing from Voyager and TNG. But this is the most complete follection I've found anywhere.

@Rosalyn @prism Sounds like that takes a lot of work, thanks so much for doing it. I am blad that paramount officially did DS9, again, hoping they will do the rest. I mean I'm sure they aren't using rocket science to decide what gets described but if you did one older series, you'd think you'd want to do the rest.
